Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberley Montgomery.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kimberley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story begins with a traumatic event. I was admitted into the hospital for a little over three weeks with a mysterious disorder that caused me to lose a lot of blood, shut off my kidney function, and raise my blood pressure to dangerous levels. I was diagnosed with aHUS (atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome). I was quickly placed on hemodialysis and biweekly infusions to help me sustain day to day life. Before this health scare, I was a working wife and mom of four young kids. I spent my days helping to counsel kids who had experienced abuse and trauma and my nights cooking and toting kids to dance, soccer, and basketball games.
I slowly recovered and began to live my new normal trying to balance dialysis, work, and family. I soon discovered that 12 hours of dialysis, 40+ hours of work, and my full-time job as mommy were too much for me to manage. I decided to stop working and took a leave of absence from my career at Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center. My days quickly became filled with doctor appointments, surgeries, and treatments but I also realized that I was more anxious, depressed, and angry with my life. Sickness had absorbed everything and that was the only thing I was focusing on. I felt lonely and hopeless.
One day when I was praying, I received a message from God that told me that my life was meaningless unless I was being used to fulfill my true purpose in life. After much thought and meditation, I realized that I was created to inspire hope, love, and encouragement in this world through my gift of counseling. I secured a contract with a local children’s home and I began counseling children who were dealing with trauma and other serious problems. I began to provide supervision for licensed professional counselor interns and I started to see joy come back into my life.
The word spread in the foster and adoption circle that I was seeing children and families and I never looked back. I remembered the pain I was dealing with and decided that I would provide a support group for those dealing with chronic illness and disease. Now I offer multiple support groups for free and I am working on adding more. My Interns have a place where they can learn and provide services for children, youth, couples and families. I want Therapy Inspired to be a light for those suffering in the darkness. I want to provide a beacon of hope. Our mission is to provide hope, healing, and inspiration.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a new business has not been a smooth road. Balancing my health issues along with starting a business is very consuming. I am financially putting everything into Therapy Inspired. Start-up costs are expensive and I definitely broke the bank putting my dream together but I wanted to be able to provide reasonable and affordable prices to families in my community. I also have found that I struggled to find a sense of community around me. Being a therapist in your own practice can get lonely and I have to be very intentional in getting to know other professionals and finding other professionals to learn and grow with.
