Meet Kirk Wilder of Utopia Food and Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirk Wilder.

Kirk started his professional career as a CPA with Arthur Andersen & Company in downtown Dallas in 1973. He had always been a fitness advocate and soon became a fitness pied piper for a lot of his business associates.

In 1979 some of Kirk’s peers said that they would help fund a fitness center in downtown Dallas so that they had a convenient place to work out based upon Kirk’s principles of efficient, safe and effective exercise utilizing circuit, strength training equipment.

In January of 1980 Kirk opened his first fitness facility, the Downtowner Fitness Center, a 2,000 sf facility in the tunnel system under Thanksgiving Square.

The Downtowner was a big hit and it wasn’t long before Kirk had expanded into four clubs in the Dallas Metroplex.

From Day 1 Kirk realized that he was his members’ advocate; they trusted and depended upon him and his team to plow through all the facts versus fiction about health and fitness and; in turn, educate his members on sound, sustainable, effective practices.

Although Kirk was a life-long fitness advocate he had no formal education in either exercise science or nutrition. It was critical to therefore to foster ongoing relationships with the top researchers in America who produced evidence-based studies to help guide his clubs. To this day, 100% of Utopia’s programs are based upon proven, published, peer reviewed, evidence-based science.

Early on Kirk also recognized that exercise alone wasn’t enough to achieve and maintain a healthy, pragmatic lifestyle and that diet also played an equally critical role; both essential to good health.

By 1987 a combined exercise and nutritional program was successfully in place. This nutritional & exercise combination, called Biometrics One-On-One, a 6 week program, started to create quite a buzz and the results were impressive.

Biometrics results were impressive enough to catch the attention of UT Southwestern Medical and in 1990 they fully tested the program. UT Southwestern was actually astonished to discover that Biometrics allowed a participant to lose an extensive amount of excess body fat and inches without the associated loss of lean muscle and no drop in body metabolism.

The documented results of the UT study were actually published in the American Dietetic Association Journal showing that it was possible to lose weight without the typically associated loss of body metabolism (RMR – Resting Metabolic Rate). These were results that could last!

Jimmy Johnson, then Head Coach for the Dallas Cowboys, was one of the UT test participants and had a great quote, “It’s not just what you lose; it’s what you gain.” Coach Johnson’s Resting Metabolic Rate had actually increased by a whopping 27.9%. Johnson also, in the 6 week program, lost 30 lbs. of fat and increased his lean mass by 7.7 lbs.
