Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirtna Charavda.
Kirtna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One of my earliest memories was being in my 7th grade Career Development class and learning about what an “entrepreneur” was and I knew that was exactly what I wanted to be. I fell in love with the term and I would walk around telling everyone I wanted to be an “entrepreneur.” Fast forward to my senior year of college, and it seemed everyone but me knew their career path with their Public Relations degree and I still had no clue. I came across a flyer on becoming a certified wedding planner and immediately enrolled in my He course in addition to my full course load. While taking the course, I felt I had found my dream career. I was going to be Dallas’ first Indian wedding planner! Mind you, I was not the “first,” but the “second” official Indian wedding planner in the metroplex.
After I graduated, I knew I needed to more exposure and experience to the wedding industry. I took an assistant job with a local, award-winning wedding photographer. This role allowed me to network with other wedding planners and I was able to connect with Kristin Hoffman, the owner of Simply Perfect Weddings. We just clicked and I was able to intern for her. She was a great mentor, having attributes that I wanted to exemplify as an independent businesswoman – strong, yet graceful; kind but firm. After a year of working with her, I became her business partner and together we took our business to average 20-30 weddings per a year. At the same time, I had begun working as a florist with a local florist. I decided I wanted to learn everything I could about the wedding industry. However, I quickly realized I was learning “tricks of the trade” but not any crucial business skills. Kristin ended up leaving out company and I suddenly had acquired an entire company. I had to learn how to run a business and learn fast.
During my first-year solo year, I thankfully had a lot of weddings booked and was able to enlist the help of a close friend who eventually became my business partner. She and I re-branded ourselves to Uptown Events and Connections to show that we were more than just weddings; we also assisted with marketing and corporate event planning. Around this time, my passion for wedding planning had started to feign and I knew it was time for a change.
Becoming a vendor relations manager for Dallas’ first online grocery delivery company, Artizone, was a natural transition since a lot of being wedding planner is coordinating vendors. I was able to build relationships with many of Dallas’ finest food artisans. It was very rewarding to help some of the businesses open up their own brick and mortar store front and grow their brands.
2016 was a pivotal year for me. I wanted to find a way to leverage all of experience and the word “entrepreneur” circled back. I had just completed my SEO course when I met with Jenny Torry, a contact from my wedding planning days. I shared my vision of helping business grow and taking them to the next level. A few months later, Jenny called to discuss how I could help her achieve her goals of going from an independent make-up artist to opening her own hair and make-up studio. Our initial meeting created a spark in me. I knew this is what I wanted to do – help businesses attain their goals, make their passion a reality. That’s when Legacy Success was born. I support and guide businesses in the areas where they need assistance; anywhere from organization, marketing, human resources, etc. I realized these areas are often overlooked but they are foundational in a business’ success.
Has it been a smooth road?
My road was definitely not smooth, but each opportunity added to my experience. There were times I questioned my decision, especially when in putting in long hours. But as Henry Ford once said, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.” Each experience now allows me to better serve my clients. Their success is ultimately my success.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Legacy Success Consulting story. Tell us more about the business.
Legacy Success Consulting is definitely my passion company.
I truly care of my clients and I choose to work with other passion-oriented business owners. Our service lines include marketing/branding, Human Resources, training and strategic planning; many times we provide a “one-stop shop” for most of our clients. My clients tend to be highly skilled in their craft but lack the knowledge, or simply the time, to invest in what’s often deemed the “administrative” side of running a business. That’s were my company comes in.
We ensure our clients are setting up a solid foundation and are putting in processes that will help they stay organized and scale in growth. We’ve trained entire teams on company policy and procedures and we’ve also assisted in recruiting and hiring a staff for a hot new restaurant.
By establishing solid business practices, we help make sure a business starts off strong. My clients know that when they hire us, we become a part of their team. Understanding that this is a joint effort and I’m with them every step of the way is what I believe steps me a part. Their wins are my wins and if something goes awry, I’m right their rolling up my sleeves alongside them to make things right.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think of the shift as two-fold. As a society, we are outsourcing more and more; think of how many people using services like Postmates or Favor to get things done. Also, small businesses have a greater chance of success, even if they choose to stay “small.” That being said, it often doesn’t make sense for them to take on the overhead of traditional “back office” work. That’s where outsourcing to my company makes sense. We already have the resources, people, and processes and can set things up so it isn’t the business owner primary focus.
Right now, I am focusing on building a team of “fixers,” as Olivia Pope from Scandal would say. We assess the business needs, identify gaps, provide viable solutions and we stay on board to see implementation through. My goal is to continue to grow my team and eventually add different service offerings. One client has already asked about virtual assistants so that’s a consideration.
All my experience over the last 10 years has led to this. My natural tendency is to help people be better. Legacy Success Consultant allows clients to leverage my experience and my passion for their ultimate success.
