Today we’d like to introduce you to Kofi Ankamah.
Kofi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
During my undergraduate at Stephen F. Austin, I picked up a job at the rec center on campus. It was the perfect job for me because I was in there 5-6 days a week consistently anyways. I had nothing lined up after graduation so I sought my professor’s advice and he recommended I looked into graduate school. Two weeks after graduation I was enrolled in graduate school for Kinesiology human performance. My training opportunity began when I was approached by the graduate assistant one day while at work. He asked me if I had ever thought about personal training and recommend me getting certified. I would help friends out with workouts and all that but never really thought about being a trainer until that moment. I studied for two months and got certified and immediately fell in love.
After graduation, I moved back to Arlington after six years and started working at 24-hour fitness. In the first month with 24, I picked four clients which was a pretty good start. From that point, I started building a pretty good clientele base. I wanted to grow more and I knew I had to have a brand so in 2016 I launched my brand Kofitness. Not long after that, I was introduced with an opportunity to move to a gym that would allow me to grow myself and my brand. I informed my clients that I would be moving gyms and all of them followed me. Fast forward three years later and here we are!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The journey has not been the smoothest. There were periods of time in the beginning when the money just wasn’t there. I started driving for Uber on the side while I was slowly building the clientele at the gym. I could have easily just quit and got a regular 9-5 but I knew where my passion and heart were. Building the business was definitely a challenge but when you know what you want and where you are trying to go nothing can get in the way of that.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kofitness story. Tell us more about the business.
Kofitness is bigger than a fitness brand. Kofitness is based on four components: mindset, consistency, nutrition, exercise. I am known for helping people grow mentally and physically and becoming the best version of their selves. I think what sets me apart is practicing what I preach and always leading by example
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think everything that happened along the way was meant to be whether it was good or bad.
