Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Astroff.
Kris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey into skincare actually began while I am working as a freelance makeup artist – I was getting a lot of skincare questions from the people in my makeup chair. With an undergraduate degree in Biology, I understood the physiology of the skin, but I didn’t know which products or treatments could help their skin conditions. To better serve my clients, I got the education and certification needed to be a Licensed Esthetician.
During this time, I absolutely fell in love with skincare and the science behind formulating skincare products. I’m very grateful for my science background, as it has granted me a better understanding of how products, ingredients and treatments interact with the skin. This knowledge enables me to provide safe, effective treatment options for a wide variety of clients’ skincare needs. Early in my career, I pursued becoming oncology-trained so that I would know how to safely treat this population. As an Esthetician, it isn’t a matter of if you will have a client with cancer, it’s a matter when, and will you know how to treat them safely.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path has not been easy, but nothing great is ever easy. I’m very grateful that my esthetics school offered night-classes, as that allowed me to continue working full-time while pursuing my esthetics license. Despite being constantly exhausted for about nine months, I always had a smile on my face knowing I was pursuing a passion.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am the Director of Skincare at The Hopemore! The spa concept is unique as we are a specialty spa – focusing on compromised health and the skin conditions that can result. Whether you are in treatment for cancer or just looking for everyday esthetics, we offer a full menu of services for men and women of any age in addition to those with compromised health. We also offer makeup services and corrective makeup services to help conceal signs of elective surgeries or for those who may have experienced an injury or other incident. All of our services are performed by oncology-trained, licensed estheticians.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Shortly after completing my oncology training, one of my regular clients shared with me that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I was able to help support her and her skin during that process, working in tandem with her oncology team. And I am proud to say that we were able to significantly mitigate the effects of radiation-induced dermatitis, which typically presents as a result of radiation therapy. Utilizing both skincare products and weekly treatments, we were able to return her skin to baseline with no permanent color or textural changes. My client’s trust and openness to my help during her journey touched my heart. That experience really highlighted that sometimes the things we cannot see are the most deeply felt. To quote Jeanna Doyle, one of the Founder of The Hopemore, “Just because someone requires different treatment, doesn’t mean they want to be treated differently.” I try to live up to that every day, both in and out of the spa.
