Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Brittan and Lindsay Anderson.
Kristin and Lindsay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Clayton Brittan, the owner’s 10-year-old son, began the business selling candy out of an air stream trailer at his sibling’s equestrian shows. His mother, Kristin Brittan, helped him take his business to the next level by opening a retro candy, soda and ice cream store in downtown Roanoke in 2012. The store was formerly the first mayor of Roanoke’s home and has been a part of the growth of Roanoke, TX, also known as the Unique Dining Capital of Texas.
Has it been a smooth road?
We now have five locations. A challenge has been growing the company with stores spread out across the state and continuing to have consistency in our brand. It doesn’t matter if you’re in College Station, TX or Celina, TX, it should look and feel like a Hey Sugar Candy Store. This is something we will always keep our focus on. COVID has been a huge obstacle for us. Forcing us to close the stores for an entire month. We are fortunate to have stores in wonderful communities. We truly feel like our stores received a ton of support not just from the city government but also the residents. We will definitely take what we have learned this year and use it to make 2021 our best year ever.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hey Sugar Candy Store story. Tell us more about the business.
We have over 400 different glass bottle sodas, we make hand make our waffle cones in-store daily (smells are free), we manufacture our own ice cream, Hey Sugar Ice Cream Co in Southlake, TX.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our store is very nostalgic, it’s a destination. I anticipate, especially after COVID, that families will shop and eat more local versus a big chain. The devastating impact COVID had on small businesses was observed by everyone in this country. I can speak for myself and say I have already made that switch as well as others I know and I see that trend continuing over time.
