Meet Kristin Michael

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Michael.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Kristin Michael Photography started with nothing but a camera given as a birthday gift, about nine years ago. I had zero photography experience but, as my husband says, the moment he gave me the camera, my eyes lit SO bright! I immediately jumped into YouTube videos and online classes to learn more. About two years and about 1,000,000 amateur digital images of my two kiddos later, I decided to make the jump into a business!

I have walked through many stages of learning how to take photos, as well as attempted many various types of photography. At this stage, I have finally settled on loving families, kids, and lifestyle images! I also place a strong emphasis on using my imagery to show the story of Type1 Diabetes. This disease is near and dear to me, as I was diagnosed at age 10, and my daughter at age 8, just this past February 2019.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I love the saying “Smooth roads never make good drivers”. Without some serious learning experiences, I would not learn the hows and whys of business! From handling finances to equipment (never get caught pulling up to a shoot and realize your battery is at home on the charger!), to how to communicate with clients, to how to make everyone feel at-ease behind a camera. It all takes practice and learning!

Kristin Michael Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
With so many forms of photography, I have found my niche in families and kids. I love the genuine smiles of a toddler, and I love the laughs that older kids bring. I also love capturing moms and dads together, as we are always the ones behind the camera, never in front! I have a strong passion for helping families capture this fleeting time in their life when the kids are younger. Before you know it, they have grown and having images of this time is such a keepsake.

I also have a strong passion for capturing portraits and lifestyle images for families with special needs children. The majority of these would be for Type 1 Diabetes, but they have also included NICU babies, kiddos battling cancer, and other rare disorders.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is such a difficult thing to define! I have found I feel most successful when I am seeing the same families come back to me year after year. What a compliment it is to me that they feel the trust in me to continue to capture these precious years! Not to mention the number of referrals I have received also helps boost my success. I would not be able to sustain this business without word-of-mouth!
