Meet Kristin Voss of Kendall Plantation in Hill Country/Boerne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Voss.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Built in 2011, the name Kendall Plantation represents the county in which it rests (Kendall) and the architecture of a Southern antebellum home. The décor, colors, and details were inspired by the design and unique architecture of Southern Louisiana Plantation homes and mirrored after the antebellum-style and old-world elegance. The Dream of Kendall Plantation came alive after we lived in south Louisiana for a few years. We loved the homes there and thought that Texas needed a bit more southern charm! So, we came back home to Boerne, and with lots of God’s help, we built Kendall Plantation.

{About the humans at Kendall Plantation}

We (Jeremy and Kristin) have been married for 11 years! We have two children, a boy, and a girl. We live close by KP on our “mini-farm”. We didn’t know we wanted a farm, but it ended up that way! We have one goat, his name is Beans, a horse named Lady, 2 cows named Snowflake and Shelby, a show steer named Mr. Stort, 2 dogs; a pug named Sausage, and a purebred mut named Leah. Can’t forget about the ducks and chickens, and we raise our own bees for honey! We LOVE sports, I mean… we love them! We both coach our kid’s baseball, football, and softball teams! Between the 2 of us, during football season, we have 8 fantasy football teams. We love football season! Win, lose or tie, Cowboys til’ we die!

We are passionate about our church, family, and work! We both graduated from Southwest Texas State (a.k.a. Texas State) University in San Marcos. Go Bobcats! Kendall Plantation was a dream come true, and lots of answered prayers. We are a small family-owned Christian business. We like to think of our brides as our KP family!

We will be celebrating our 8th year in business this fall! Just about 1,000 weddings have taken place at Kendall Plantation, and we can’t wait for the next 1,000. We never get tired of weddings, we live for weddings, and I think that is what has help make Kendall Plantation so successful. We love our jobs.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t always smooth sailing in the beginning! Once we found the contractor and signed on that dotted line, we were promised a 6-month build-out. 12 months later… we finally opened the doors. It was a rough road! Record drought brought construction to a halt for some time. Then, it was one thing after another that went wrong. The roof was installed just millimeters off what it should have been, which created a whole new set of problems that ultimately resulted in having to take the roof off, and then put it back on. It is paperwork on paperwork to finish a commercial building and open the doors. We learned quickly once we opened the doors, that maintenance of the building would take a majority of our time. With so many humans in and out of these doors, you can’t imagine the workload of fixing things after weddings. We struggled (and sometimes still do) with vendors. Ultimately, any vendor that walks through the doors of KP, is a direct reflection of KP. So we strive to suggest the best vendors that Texas has to offer brides. We want nothing less than the best for our brides, and their guests. We want everyone at the wedding to have an experience of a lifetime.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kendall Plantation story. Tell us more about the business.
Kendall Plantation is a wedding venue. Yes, we do corporate events at times, but our passion is weddings. The venue was built and designed to create the perfect setting for a wedding. We are most known for our grand staircase inside and garden ceremony area. Many have tried to copy Kendall Plantation, and they have come close architecturally. But they can not copy our genuine at home feeling. We are family owned and operated. This is how we feed our family, so we take it very seriously. We don’t have a high turnover of employees, we don’t have a stack of venues to manage or a corporate office to call. We are Kendall Plantation, just the four of us who work day in and day out to make everything just perfect for every wedding.

We are often praised by vendors for being the best and easiest wedding venue to work at. We make it easy for vendors to work here by offering easy setup, early set up, flexibility with scheduling. We don’t micromanage vendors, they are experts in their field, so we let them be the experts in their field!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The wedding industry is not going anywhere. People will always get married. Although trends show brides are using less flowers, or maybe wearing a suit instead of a tux, or even forgoing cake cutting, and toasts… but a place to hold the wedding, the venue, will always be an always. The venue sets the tone for the wedding. Whether it be an elegant ballroom, Texas Chic barn, or a gorgeous Texas Beach… people will always get married. So, from a venue standpoint, I think the venue world will continue to see a growing trend in unique custom-built wedding venues.
