Meet Kristin Williams of Wonderfully Made Nutrition Counseling in Plano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Williams.

Kristin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I wrestled with issues related to food and body image. This led to the development of an eating disorder at age 13. During this time, I met with a registered dietitian, licensed professional counselor and a cardiologist. My relationship with my dietitian forever transformed my own relationship with food as well as my personal career path. I attended Texas A&M University (Whoop!) and studied nutritional sciences. After this, I completed a dietetic internship at Medical City Dallas Hospital.

I am a certified eating disorder registered dietitian and own a private practice in DFW called, Wonderfully Made Nutrition Counseling. I have a passion for helping individuals to heal their relationship with food using a non-diet and non-scale focused approach. As a dietitian, I have had the opportunity to co-lead a body image support group as part of the Recovery for Life ministries as well as founding the first annual In His Image Body Image Conference for teen girls and women.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but the journey has been worth every bump and detour! I have learned a lot about perseverance along the way. Some of the struggles I encountered along the way included not being accepted for specific positions right away. I have found that if you apply and interview with a company, but get turned down for the position, you should still continue to pursue opportunities within the company as they arise.

I have also found that passion precedes the performance. You may not have a ton of experience right off the bat, but if you are passionate, you can be trained to do the job well and have the opportunity to excel in the field. Other struggles I have encountered include being told, “no” to ideas, book publishing, positions, etc. I have learned that it only takes one “yes.” Persistence is key.

I have also learned that, in the field of disordered eating, it is imperative to do your own personal work to make sure that you are in a healthy headspace to be able to walk alongside patients on their road to recovery.

We’d love to hear more about your practice.
At Wonderfully Made Nutrition Counseling, I provide outpatient nutrition counseling to individuals with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image issues and a history of chronic dieting. I have a Plano office as well as a Dallas office and I also provide virtual sessions. In my practice, I use a non-diet, non-scale focused approach believing that all foods fit and that healthy behaviors can be practiced at every size.

As a dietitian, I help individuals to separate their food and feelings, as we know these can oftentimes be very intertwined. For interested individuals, I use a faith-based approach incorporating scriptural truths into nutrition counseling as we look to see what the Word says about appearance, food, worth and value.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that practicing being human has been the most simple, yet most important characteristic that I have brought to my practice. People want to talk to someone who can relate to them. They want to know that someone hears them and understands them. They don’t want walking and talking nutrition textbooks. They want someone who knows and understands the true human experience.

We don’t have to have it all together or all figured out to make a difference. Simply showing up, listening and guiding the patient in the process of recovery goes a long way. I also firmly believe that compassion goes a long way. As the saying goes, “People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care.” It may sound cliche, but it is so true!
