Meet Kristy Sauceda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Sauceda.

Every artist and entrepreneur has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a daughter of immigrant parents. Growing up, I felt ashamed of being Mexican. I went to schools where there was a very small number of Hispanic students. I never liked to talk Spanish or admit I was Mexican. I was ashamed. As I grew up, I started going to schools with more diversity and I started to feel a little more comfortable with my identity. It wasn’t until I visited Mexico for the first time with my family when I realized how proud I was of being Mexico. By traveling to Mexico, I was able to see the culture, music, food, people, and more. I learned to love my culture and see all it had to offer.

The more I traveled to Mexico and explored different places, the more I fell in love. The summer after I turned 18 I decided to start my own business called “Amor a Mexico” in English it translates to “Love for Mexico”. I wanted to share the love of my culture with other people. Many people have this idea or mindset that Mexico is all about drug cartels, kidnappings, poverty and so on. But that’s not what Mexico has to offer. I wanted people to see that Mexico is a beautiful country that has many talented people who create amazing cultural clothing. I work directly with artisans of different parts of Mexico that embroider blouses, dresses, and more. Through my business, I’ve been able to meet many kinds of people and see how much everyone is proud to be Mexican and even see people from other cultures admire mine.

Please tell us about your business.
I am proud to be able to work directly with talented artisans of Mexico. Seeing all the hard work they put into embroidering one blouse is amazing. I’m proud of what my business stands for and to be able to share my culture with the world.

What advice do you have for those just starting out?
I think there is always an opportunity for someone if they look for it. Women are able to do anything they put their mind to it we just have to work hard (sometimes more than men).
