Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Methenitis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
KM Photo Studio was born from the teachings I had as a little girl. Around the age of 9, my Poppy put a camera in my hand and taught me how to shoot in manual. I’ve lost count of the number of times I got in trouble for using an entire roll of film on a single sunset. Growing up, photography was never looked at as a possible career. In fact, I received a degree in Human Development & Family Studies from Texas Tech University and used that degree fresh out of college for a few years. In 2009, my first son was born and that was when this dream really began.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a business owner isn’t exactly what I would call easy. As your business begins, it takes time and commitment to build up your client base. It thrills me that so many families return again and again to trust me to document their stories. On top of being a full-time photographer, I also have the tasks of bookkeeping, time management and client relations. While it’s certainly not been the smoothest of roads, those bumps are what push me out of my comfort zone and build character.
KM Photo Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
KM Photo Studio is a boutique photo studio. I have been documenting family stories since 2009, and I love every moment of it. Watching bellies grow, babies develop, and families come together in beautiful moments is one of my greatest passions.
My background experience working in daycare and as a private nanny, as well as having two kids of my own means I have a lot of hands on experience with infants. My clients have dubbed me the “Baby Whisperer”. While I offer many different types of photography, my specialties lie in newborn, baby and family sessions. I am known specifically for my use of light. During outdoor sessions, I love capturing the gorgeous golden light. With indoor sessions, I have perfected my craft using studio lighting.
Being a successful business owner at a young age with so many returning clients is what I am most proud of. I’m proud to show my two young boys that they can do anything they set their minds to as long as they work hard and stay dedicated. My customer service and photographic skills are the top two things that set me apart from others.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is living a life you are proud of and doing what you love. While it may not be the typical business model, I think you must love what you do to truly be successful. One must find happiness to find success.
