Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal O’Donald.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. But no one said all the steps have to be in a straight line or even going in the same direction. I am an educator and an advocate for healthy living. I consistently work to marry the two disciplines. I taught the sciences in Dallas middle schools. I was promoted to the Science Department Chair and eventually to Vice Principal at a prep charter school. All the while, my career in education was progressing. I felt that something was missing. I attended Chiropractic School in Georgia and I believe that not being involved in healthcare was the “something” that was missing. In the midst of me seriously thinking about taking a different direction professionally, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, she is a survivor, she is my hero and I am grateful. Ironically, a business idea came along with my gratitude. Advanced Bodyworks and Synergistic Massage was founded on striving to provide specialized bodywork and therapeutic massage for a customized experience for each client. I decided that people needed medical massages. ABSM would always give a relaxing session that included measured improvements. I figured that if we could deliver on this intent, the business would grow successfully and be useful to the public. Currently, I do still teach but now it’s students that are studying to become Licensed Massage Therapists in Texas. I tell my students often that the best service that we can give a client is to learn all you can about your profession and use it to help them feel renewed, revived, and rejuvenated.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road. But I don’t know if a bumpy road is necessarily a bad road. Not if you get to where you’re going, right? Similar to most small businesses, ABSM has challenges. There are always things to manage. Your finance and scheduling, marketing, taking care of your customer and all with a smile. To see a happy healthier client is all worth it. ABSM is available for corporate chair massage de-stress work sessions, get together group pampering sessions and other packages that we can customize for you or your company.
