Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Price-Green and Patricia Elliott.
Krystal and Patricia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Tina’s Closet was founded roughly a year ago after my mom “Tina” passed away from her battle with cancer. My mother had always been a walking fashion statement, to say the least. She had her own style, her own look, and her own way of putting this with that and making it POP! One day after her passing, my aunt Patricia and I were going through her closet and it seems like a light bulb just went off! My aunt suggested that we take the items and sell them at a bargain price! My mother loved a great deal and a good bargain! Saturday morning garage sales, red tag days at the thrift store, you name the place, she knew the sale! Most of the items she left behind were new still with tags or gently used. During her battle with cancer, she lost over 100 pounds so you can imagine most clothes had gotten too big for her. Some heavier handbags she was no longer able to carry because they were simply to heavy for her. So, with the idea being there immediately we both said “Tina’s Closet” and at that moment, Tina’s Closet was created. I made a Facebook post advertising Tina’s Closet and it really took off from there. Now, here we are, a year later, we’ve expanded our inventory, and our bargain hunters hit the streets daily to find our customers the best deals! Tina’s Closet caters to every working woman who wants to treat herself without paying the retail markup prices!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not smooth! This road has been filled with many many challenges! Having a start-up business is by far one of the hardest challenges we have faced. Of course, you have your spectators that are waiting for the downfall, but we have made a commitment to my mom and our wonderful customers that Tina’s Closet isn’t going anywhere anytime soon! Trying to stay competitive with other resale shops is also a struggle because, of course, we are the underdogs in the fight, but somehow we always manage to come out on top.
I think one thing we both struggled with especially in the beginning was balance! How did we still have family time, we both worked full-time jobs, and still be responsive to our customers? The last thing you want is a bad review on social media! Lol. That can make or break your business. Overall, now, I think we’re in a good place with balancing everything which has really helped us grow professionally.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tina’s Closet 59 – what should we know?
Oh, this is simple! We specialize in DEALS! Tina’s Closet is known for having great quality products at a low cost! We have the brands that people love, at a price they can afford! When we first started, every item sold actually came out of my mom’s closet, now that we have grown and expanded, we have had to invest in vendors for our closet. Every item we purchase from our vendors are 100% authentic and we make sure we are buying at the lowest price available in order to bring our customers the lowest price.
I believe we would both agree that we are most proud of the legacy we are able to create, and how we are able to cherish my mother daily or speak her name daily, this makes us proud! It makes us proud when we are out and our community knows who we are! We sit back and smile and think how one sad moment sitting on the floor her closet turned into such an amazing business structure to keep her alive in our hearts and mind daily.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Oh my! The list goes on and on. They say it takes a village to raise a child, I say it takes a village to start a business! We have been surrounded by nothing but encouragement since day one! Our family first and foremost has been the biggest support system that one could ask for! Patricia and I both have close friends that pushed us from behind to bring this vision forth.
I’m married to an awesome man, Cornell Green, and he took time to research for us the market and what we would need to take this to the next level. He’s given us so much business advice that we would’ve had to figure out on our own.
Patricia’s oldest daughter, Lakeshia lives out of state, and she has become a bargain hunter for us as well! Lol, she might know it, but she definitely has!
My sisters, aunts, in-laws, I mean I could go on and on, they have all played a tremendous part in helping us get to where we are today.
