Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Yates.
Krystal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started EBR because I saw the need for solid HR advice for small business owners. Most small business owners are breaking at least one employment law and don’t even know about it. I wanted to provide a cost-effective solution and help them turn their employees from expenses to assets.
This led to working with job seekers, helping them navigate the constantly changing job market. Job hunting is not the same today as it was a decade ago. I’m able to bring a unique view to their job search – that of the hiring manager. This helps them make much more effective use of their time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. Learning the best ways to market my business has been my biggest challenge; however, with the help of SCORE I’ve managed to avoid most of the other pitfalls new businesses encounter. As a SCORE mentor, I’m constantly helping other businesses navigate challenges. It is the best education I could ask for. I also have access to my own mentor and utilize them to help me through my own challenges. I think the most important lesson I’ve learned is to be flexible and think outside the box.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the EBR Consulting story. Tell us more about the business.
We provide HR expertise. Whether we are teaching small business owners how to hire the right employees or teaching job seekers how to find the right employer, we are making the hiring process clearer.
Small businesses don’t fail because their owners aren’t good at their business, they fail because the owner never learns how to run the business. Employees are the greatest unknown. From following confusing employment law to finding and hiring the best people, adding employees is one of the biggest risks businesses take. Our sweet spot is businesses with between 1 and 10 employees. This is a severely underserved market and yet it is one of the neediest. We step in to help with affordable, customized solutions.
As job seekers started reaching out, we learned that our expertise is just as valuable to them. Employees often don’t have an educated third party to answer their HR questions. What are hiring managers really looking for? How do you interpret new hire paperwork? What happens after you give notice? These are the areas – along with the standard resume writing and interview coaching – where we are able to provide value.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
As someone once said, “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity”. I’ve worked hard to get where I am yet I still have a long way to go. I’ve “lucked” into some really great relationships that have helped me along the way. While I certainly consider myself lucky, hard work and great mentors are the foundation of my success.
