Meet Kylie King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylie King.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Fitness was always a personal love of mine since I was 11 years old. Captain of the netball team and fastest runner in my school this was what i enjoyed the most. Unfortunately my dream id being a PE teacher or a dancer never happened for me as I left home at a very young age.  So Career-wise I became a travel consultant and then travelled the world working as hostel management. After years of traveling, I decided to finally find a husband and there he was on tinder. A handsome Texan who invited me to live in Texas with him after we got married and had a baby boy. When Austin was 6 weeks old, we flew to Texas to start a life. I was such a hard worker from a young age and didn’t know what to do ‘just being a mom’ so I started a little website, running errands business called pink octopus company and found 6 ladies to join me in helping with odd jobs around town. Having a team was something I missed the most from management in the UK. This was successful for a few months and then COVID came along and life changed for everyone. I took the lockdown as an opportunity to study! I left school when I was 16 and lived alone so had to work to make money and never has the chance to study as an adult so I took what I loved (fitness) and made a new career in my 40s. I began with a 500-hour pilates diploma, a job in pilates sales in the pilates studio and got promoted to GM all while training to be an instructor in my first year. It was an amazing year for me and helped me a lot to focus while the world was lost. After a year of dedication to pilates, my husband, and my baby, I discovered yoga was something I wanted to add to my education. 200 hours later I mixed up the pilates and yoga and created YogaTwist! I started advertising on Facebook and got a few hours co-sharing at a martial arts studio and after a couple weeks the ladies starting flowing in the door so I went for it and found my own studio! I based my focus on a little boutique of Marilyn Monroe who was curvy and bold and wanted to mix yoga and pilates in a fun and upbeat class style for everyBODY! I took on another instructor Lea Goin who was amazing with the senior members and she created a slow class while I took on the fit and twisted classes. As business grew, we added more and more styles and have now created 16 different styles to suit everyone of all ages and abilities. After 6 months I opened a second studio as I wanted to share this style of yoga with more people as the results and passion from my members was contagious and inspiring! YogaTwist was actually changing people’s lives and making them happier and healthier people. So here I am with 2 locations in Aubrey, 7 instructors, and a huge mix of classes to suit everyone. I am so happy I created YogaTwist and I’m excited to see the members grow!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it was a smooth road for me which is why I knew it was the right thing. Every time I went shopping exactly what I wanted would just be just there in front of me and the members were just so amazing and grateful for the studio. All the colors came together and designs in my head were there in every thrift store I visited. My husband’s family supported me every step of the way and no question from them that I wouldn’t succeed so it just flowed like a yoga sequence from the beginning.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I worked in travel for 15 years and then travelled the world for 5 years. I became a successful hostel manager and trained others on how to manage a hostel. I won an award in Edinburgh for the most improved hostel in the world voted by hostel world and this was my biggest achievement. I took a work break and lived in Madrid, Spain and then settled into the student housing business’s in Edinburgh which I became very successful at. I work extremely hard and become married to my job at times. I always want my members to be happy and everyone I work with or for is treated like a member of my close family and taken care of. I love my employees dearly and became known as a very approachable manager that also achieves great results in business.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Yoga will always be around. There are some areas in the USA where it is more popular and Aubrey TX is harder than some due to the misconception of all yoga being a religion. I hope to break that and let the community know YogaTwist is a fitness plan to help the mind and body and creates happiness within. I plan to grown my business across America and hopefully begin a franchise one day.
