Today we’d like to introduce you to La Teisha Johnson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started esthetics as a laser hair removal technician who led me to work for a couple of different medical spas. I’d decided to go out in my own and opened Destiny Day Spa by Donyea in Allen in 2010. I worked a full-time job while getting it up and running. After the birth of my first set of twins in 2013, I went full time. In 2017, I opened my second location in Frisco.
In the beginning, I’d used Groupon to gain new clients. A lot of those clients are still with me today. It took a lot of hard work and determination as this career is very feast or famine lol you can be busy one week and dead the next. I go out of my way to make each of my clients feel special, and each treatment is customized according to their skincare need.
I am married with two sets of twins under the age of 6, a teen daughter and a teen bonus son. They are my why❤️
Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, the struggles! You don’t just open, and clients come from nowhere. You have to be trustworthy and show people that you know how to take care of their skin. This is why I continued my full-time job until I had enough clients for the business to pay for itself. I purchased equipment a little at a time as to not go into a lot of debt opening the business.
I’ve also learned not to be “bullied” by clients. There are those that will try to take advantage of you by telling you they want your services but only at a lower price. Or get me in at this particular time, or I’ll write a bad review. I’ve also had a client that purchased a facial package, used it, then called her cc company for a chargeback. This was when a signed package agreement was born. It has never happened again since I’ve implemented the signed agreement.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Destiny Day Spa by Donyea story. Tell us more about the business.
I am most proud of my customer service and knowledge of skin. An Esthetician is more than someone that slaps on some products and rubs your face. I study ingredients, constantly take continuing education courses and I research product lines. I make a concerted effort to be sure each of my clients feel special and as though they are my one and only client.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The skincare industry is ALWAYS changing. That’s why it’s important to keep abreast of modalities and product ingredients. You absolutely never know what the next trend may be.
My goal is to become an Esthetician mentor and coach to help new estheticians get started and also encourage them along the way.
