Today we’d like to introduce you to La’Boris Cole.
Thanks for sharing your story with us La’Boris. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Reflecting over my childhood, I have always enjoyed dancing and serving others by being a safe place and secret treasure box for my family and friends to share their problems, insecurities, and fears. I can remember my friends telling me, “you should either be an NFL or NBA dancer, doctor or psychotherapist because you can dance, you’re smart, you have a nurturing spirit and you give great advice.”
While pursuing my high school education, I was a cheerleader and loved to dance. I began my experience in liturgical dance and mime at my grandmother’s church in Philadelphia, MS. However, when I began attending my father’s church, there was not a dance ministry. At that time, I knew I was missing something because dance had become a form of therapy for me.
Consequently, I founded Born 2 Danz, a ministry that provides technical and prophetic teaching to liturgical dancers, mime, and worship leaders around the world. Yearly, I have hosted worship arts conferences in Mississippi and Atlanta. June 3-5, 2021 will be our 15th year and our first year hosting B2D conference in Fort Worth, TX.
Once I graduated from high school, I began training for a Professional NBA Cheerleading team. I remember asking my father, who is a Pastor, what did he think about his daughter being on television dancing for a professional team. My father was very supportive, but there was something that he said to me that stuck out to me. He asked, “What are your long term goals professionally? Will being a professional dancer benefit you in the long run?” After pondering and researching the pay, I knew quickly what route I was going.
Instead of taking the offer to become a Pro Cheerleader, I went to college instead. I pursued psychology in undergrad and counseling for my Masters and Doctoral Degrees. I pursued counseling with a specialty in Marriage and Family Therapy because I fell in love with hearing other’s stories and I was curious about learning what contributes to developing and maintaining a healthy relationship/marriage and preventive methods of experiencing divorce.
Additionally, the passion behind me pursuing counseling and marriage and family, is contributed to my parents divorcing. Growing up, I always said I do not want to experience divorce and my children experiencing the impact. Also, I wanted to learn more about human behavior and relationships. I believe once a person understands human behavior and the skills needed to develop and maintain a relationship with self and others, this can assist in identifying the what, why, and perhaps the tools needed in creating an abundant life in one’s singleness and marriage. I personally believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience healthiness and wholeness in every area of their life despite childhood or adult trauma.
In addition to my professional career in counseling, I founded the eWoman Life Coaching program for women of all walks of life. eWoman Life Coaching program was created to develop and enhance one’s interpersonal skills, ensure one’s dream becomes a reality, and assist with identifying resources and tools to combat roadblocks that may prohibit one from experiencing WHOLENESS in every area of your life. Through my personal experience and education, I have always desired to be a light, example, and encourage other women to operate in the full potential despite societal, cultural, or generational barriers. As a result, eWoman Life Coaching program has been one of many tools I have used to be a change agent for my community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road with a few bumps. My most challenging years was when I began pursuing my doctoral degree. I had to relocate from MS to TN. I didn’t know anyone in TN at that time and I was not aware that I was starting one of the most difficult tasks of my life. EARNING a doctorate degree, demands ALL of YOU and you must have a strong emotional support system. I had to rely on my family who were far away and I had to be open to developing new friendships in a state that felt foreign. Also, I had to learn how to incorporate my passion, dance, into my program. Thank God. My professors were very receptive to my calling and would allow me to use dance as a way to complete some of the assignments. Now that was very cool. Lol. By the grace of God, I DID IT and MADE IT.
Please tell us about Born 2 Danz.
Born 2 Danz is an international ministry that travels the world teaching and ministering the word of God through the Arts. Born 2 Danz host conferences around the world that educate, empower, and encourage dance and mime ministers, worship leaders, and ambassadors of Christ through professional training and prophetic impartations. Also, Born 2 Danz integrates the Arts with Mental Health. Yearly, Born 2 Danz provides an educational forum to educate individuals about mental health, medication management, and coping strategies used for psychological challenges.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is spending time with my grandmother. She was the first person to support and encourage me to dance and achieve all my dreams. I use to jump on her couch as if it was a trampoline. She use to fuss at me everyday about tearing up her furniture. Then, when I would go home with my mom, I use to jump on her couch, her bed, and my bed. Lol! I thought I was a real life gymnast. But it was in those moments where I got my best practice with improving my toe touches and stretches in the air. Listen! I owe both of them new furniture! LOL!
