Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakesha Williams.
Hi Lakesha , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the cake and treat business began in 2020 during my mother’s 50th birthday celebration. We had ordered from a local small business, but the process was stressful due to poor communication and the long travel required for pickup. Instead of letting that discourage me, it inspired me to try it myself. I started with dipped strawberries, teaching myself through YouTube tutorials in the middle of the pandemic. From there, I expanded to other treats like candied apples, chocolate-covered grapes, dipped pretzels, and Rice Krispies—really anything people requested. Eventually, someone asked me for a cake. I turned to my grandmother, who guided me through the basics of baking, and I even took a few cake-decorating classes to sharpen my skills.
What started as a simple idea has grown into a full passion and business. Now, I’m able to offer a wide range of custom cakes and treats for all kinds of events. I’ve always had a creative side, but I never imagined this would be the path where I’d showcase it. Baking has become my way of turning creativity into something that not only looks beautiful but also brings people joy!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t always been easy due to me being a perfectionist. There’s been less than a handful of customers that have almost made me re think my choices but nothing to bad I couldn’t bounce back from. Having a small business it’s definitely not for the weak. One of my biggest challenges has been balancing customer requests with my own creativity. Many clients send me photos of designs they’ve seen elsewhere, and while I can recreate those, it sometimes limits my ability to showcase my own style. My business is called Ki’s Sweet Creations for a reason—I love bringing original ideas to life. I hope more people continue to trust me with creative freedom, because that’s when I can deliver something truly unique and memorable:-)
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in decorating treats and cakes. Mostly cakes with buttercream I am able to create a visual experience to match the theme of what my customers request. Serving events from birthdays, holiday parties, school events, wedding and many more.
Started teaching classes and that has been my passion. Always been quiet and reserved but this year I taught my second cake class and it was amazing. Getting out my comfort zone and can’t wait to see what I do next.
I am most proud of the customers they keep coming back. I love new clients don’t get me wrong but those that have been there since I started in 2020. The continued trust they give me for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. I learned everything I know from literally YouTube. I didn’t go to a fancy culinary school it’s all been self taught. What sets me apart apart is that my cakes especially not only look good they taste good
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is being creative. I love taking a blank slate and transforming it into something beautiful—whether that’s designing a custom cake, experimenting with a new flavor, or creating a whole dessert spread inspired by a party theme. I’ve always had an eye for transformation—even before baking, I enjoyed repurposing old furniture into something new. Now, with my business, I get to do the same thing in a sweeter way.
The best part is the reaction from customers. When I receive a message later in the day saying how much they loved their cake or how it lit up their event, that’s the most rewarding bonus.I also find happiness in community. Hosting cake-and-sip events allows me to meet new people across the DFW area and share laughs, conversations, and creativity. You never know what someone may be going through, so if I can brighten their day with a smile, a laugh, or even a slice of cake—that’s a true blessing.
