Today we’d like to introduce you to Lana K. Hoover.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a theatre teacher for close to 20 years and was totally burned out, plus I wanted to be able to have time to get back into theatre myself. My brother had started a company, KWH Consulting, that is an electricity brokerage company, and he offered me an opportunity to work with him. I thought I’d do it for about 3 months, but that was 15 years ago and I’m still doing it…. and I’m still working in theatre as well. Our company finds companies the best rate on electricity, very close to what an independent insurance broker does for your insurance needs, and the majority of our clients are in the property management business. I bid out electric service all day, and attend to my clients’ needs on an ongoing basis. I’m “on call” most of the time, but work from home and my phone, so I can also travel when I choose to. Then most nights, I head to the theatre or work on comedy sketches and songs for our comedy duo, Girls Gone Weird.
My brother died in a car accident in December of 2016 and it was devastating… it still is, but I’m honored to continue his company with his other partners as well. It’s been a very challenging year, but I’m glad to have survived, the company continues to grow…. and I’ve done 4 shows as well. Whew!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not smooth at all, as you can see from the last question. The business of electricity brokerage can oftentimes be very challenging and occasionally clients can be difficult. Most are very kind and I’ve made many great friends of some, but others…. not so much. It’s difficult to really “take time off”, as the need for electricity never ends, of course. But I’m lucky that I can work from a computer / phone in most cases.
As far as my acting career, I’ve been very lucky. I’ve been cast in many shows…. not ALL that I auditioned for… but many directors have been gracious enough to use my talents. I so appreciate that. As I get older, the roles that are available are a bit more difficult to find, but I’ve been blessed with lots of fun and challenging parts.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the KWH Consulting story. Tell us more about the business.
KWH Consulting started out as a family business, but has grown into one of the most respected electricity brokerage companies in Texas. The majority of our clients are property management companies and we broker for many of the top property management companies in the country. We pride ourselves on personal care for our clients and immediate response to our clients. Some of the electric providers that we broker for are; TXU, Direct Energy, Cirro Energy, Reliant, Summer and several others, giving our clients choices in terms and rates.
As for my acting career, I pride myself on working hard, being respectful to my fellow actors and directors, and continuing to hone my craft. I take each role as a chance to improve for the next one. I love comedy and am cast in those roles often, but love to take on a serious role just as much.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
So, so, so, so much. Although, I’ve always worked hard once an opportunity presents itself. If bad luck happens, then I work to change the luck around…. that sometimes works. I’ve had rough times (yes, the last year has been very hard), but I’ve also been through 2 divorces, raised two wonderful children alone and now have 4 grandchildren (#5 is on the way). I find ways to be with my family as often as I can and also help with my two elderly parents. It’s not easy, but sometimes being lucky works out…. and if it doesn’t. I work to change the vibe. I’ve not had a perfect life, but I’ve learned to adapt and change to make the best of every situation. I once told someone, “I’m a pro at do-overs and begin-agains” and I keep doing that. I think I’m ready to just stay static for a while….I’m happy with life now.
