Meet Lanae Mack of Lanae Got Cakes in Downtown Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lanae Mack.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began not knowing a thing about cakes, only knowing I loved to eat them, lol. I was working in a temporary position for Sephora back in 2014. They had a creepy dessert contest for Halloween with cash prizes. So, you know me I love competition and money soooo it was only right. I entered the contest with the first cake I’ve ever made in my life. I was nervous because one I’ve never cooked, let alone baked for anyone. When they announced the winners, guess who was in first place with their super creepy chocolate cake! Yep, you guessed, it’s me! Shortly after that, the position ended and my son’s birthday was weeks away. I needed to save money this time. So, I decided to make his 2nd birthday cake myself. I watched several YouTube videos before starting. He’s addicted to basketball so I made a basketball hoop. He loved it!!! Looking back, it’s hideous lol but with time I’ve built my skills and the rest is history! Now, I’m making cakes for the best radio stations in Dallas 97.9 & K 104.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a perfect road. There’s been several times I wanted to give up. There’s been times when it was impossible to please a customer. Times where I’ve shorted myself and didn’t make much of a profit. It took time to learn my pricing, also took time finding the clientele willing to pay for my art.

Please tell us about Lanae Got Cakes.
I don’t make just the regular cakes with icing slapped on them. I am known for my realistic 3D sculpted cakes. Making things like the Classic OG Jordan’s to watches and Gucci T-shirts. I love a good challenge! I’ve always been artistic so this really gives me a chance to express that side.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child was playing outside with my older brother. We had just moved to a new house and he had a great idea, lol. We found paint in the garage purple and yellow! His bright idea was to paint the driveway like the Lakers basketball team which was our dad’s favorite team. When they got home, it didn’t go over too well, lmao. We still laugh about it to this day.
