Today we’d like to introduce you to Lance Selgo.
Lance, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Back in 2010 while working in Corporate America, a co-worker listed his Keller, TX home for sale. His Realtor listed the property with pictures that she took with her pocket camera, and the photos didn’t do the property justice. Interested in photography, I thought I could perhaps get a better result to market his property correctly.
I rented a camera and lens and we re-shot his home. The result turned out fantastic, so I took the photos to some real estate agents that I knew through acquaintances. They agreed that the photos looked great, and said there may be a viable business opportunity in real estate photography.
I ended up taking photos for some Realtors that I knew, and honed my skills while still maintaining my day job. After a slow but steady growth, I was forced to make a decision and I chose going full-time as a small business owner and left Corporate America.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m fortunate that building my real estate photography business was a pretty smooth process. Working in Corporate America as my “day job” paid the bills so starting the business wasn’t a necessity for me. I was able to slowly build the business up via word-of-mouth until I got to the point where I could no longer do both effectively.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Unique Exposure Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Unique Exposure Photography was created to be strictly a real estate photography business. We only take photos of homes, focusing mostly on residential real estate. You won’t see us shooting weddings, family portraits, etc. With the majority of buyers starting their home search online, professional real estate photography is imperative! Sellers (even in a hot seller’s market) need to show their home in its best light to help drive as much buyer traffic as possible.
One of the things we brought to the forefront in DFW is HD Full-Motion Video Tours. Shot at 1080p, we do real video tours of properties – not still photos stitched together and placed on YouTube. Buyers get a visual of the layout of the home, and agents are able to take advantage of video marketing which is growing tremendously.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m lucky that I didn’t have to start my business to maintain my livelihood. I had Corporate America backing me up allowing me to take the slow-but-steady road in building my business. I also think my up-bringing helped shape me into the driven small-business owner that I am today. I am attentive to my clients and their needs, show up on-time to all of my appointments and deliver the end result as promised.

So great to see Lance featured here! Lance rocks both professionally and personally! What he didn’t mention here is that he also gives back to our community by shooting the Dwell with Dignity installations for free, participates in charity events through his Crossfit connections and is just an all around amazing person. He’s also an asset that I cannot do without in my business as a home stager as well!
