Today we’d like to introduce you to Latia Patterson.
Hi Latia , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Baddie Book Nook really grew out of two important parts of who I am: my love for helping others and my love for reading.
I’ve always had a helping heart, One of my earliest memories of that was during Hurricane Sandy when I was just 6 years old. MY mom had me helping her out by giving out cans of food to people in our community. Even at that young age, I remember being involved in helping people and seeing how something as simple as giving could make a difference.
Years later, in 2024, I fell in love with reading. As I became more involved in the book community, I started thinking about how reading is often associated with being a “nerd” or something that is only for people who are considered “smart”. I never felt like that should be the case. Reading is for everyone. You shouldn’t have to fit a certain image, have a certain level of education, or feel like you need to prove that you’re intelligent to enjoy a book. That became part of the inspiration behind Baddie Book Nook.
I wanted to create a space where people could be unapologetically themselves while enjoying books. What started as my personal love for books has grown into something much bigger. Baddie Book Nook has expanded into bookish content, community events, workshops and merchandise.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to turn an idea to an actual brand and business. I’ve learned a lot from when I first started in 2024. There have definitely been moments here I questioned whether I was doing enough or moving fast enough, I’ve had to remind myself that I’m building something from the ground up, and that takes time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Baddie Book Nook is a lifestyle and community brand built around making reading feel more social, exciting, and inclusive. We create bookish content and experiences that allow people to engage with books beyond simply reading them.
What makes us different is thew way we combine books, personality, creativity, and community. I don’t want to feel like a traditional book club where we simply read a book and discuss it. I want reading to become an experience. That can look like attending a bookish event, receiving Baddie Book Mail, discovering a new author through our content, or simply finding a book that makes someone excited to read again.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I haven’t had a traditional mentor in the sense of having one person who consistently guided me throughout my journey. A major turning point for me came from taking a college course on social entrepreneurship, That class sparked my interest in entrepreneurship and helped me realize that I could combine my passion for helping people with building something of my own.
