Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToyia S Jordan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I Am Beautiful Movement™ Non-Profit Organization, Henderson, TX. This organization was established & founded in July 2013, along with my daughter, Destini. I started this organization because I didn’t feel confident or beautiful at that time in my life. I had taken a terrible fall and skinned the side of my face up and had to have dental work. I knew if I felt like this other people must feel the same way sometimes.
So, I was unemployed when I founded this organization. I didn’t feel like I was worthy to even put on an event, but with the help of God and one of my AMAZING mentors we made it happen! God began to use me and birth other gifts out of me that I didn’t even know existed. Now my confidence level is back like it was when I was in high school, if not better. In 2016 we came under the auspices of Empowerment Community Development Corporation 501c3. We encourage and promote Mother/Daughter relationships through bonding activities, helping 6th-12th-grade girls, college ladies & Mothers to deal with self-esteem, self-image and confidence issues that they’re faced with on a daily basis. An annual workshop is hosted yearly to show the girls and young women how to dress, wear makeup according to their age, financial literacy, budgeting information and Equipping girls to create visions and plans to reach their educational and entrepreneurship dreams.
Also, self-evaluation activities and DIY projects are done with the girls. Women motivational speakers and entrepreneurs are in attendance to encourage our young girls that they can succeed at anything they set their mind too. 2019 will be an epic year for I Am Beautiful Movement…Our Special Guest for the 7th Annual Workshop will be Miss America 2019 Nia Franklin! We are elated to have her be apart this year as we step into unseen territory. The organization puts on several free events throughout the year such as Pads and Panties Mission Drive and Prom Dress Closet. We give young girls the opportunity to be apart of photo shoots, which helps build their confidence & self-esteem levels. Every young girl should have the opportunity to feel BEAUTIFUL!
Ms. Toyia Jordan is the visionary & founder of I Am Beautiful Movement. She’s a fierce proponent of girls empowerment and has dedicated herself to not only pouring into girls but also educating them about the issues they face on a daily basis such as; self-confidence, self-esteem, health, and beauty. Lady Toyia is personally involved in all of the events sponsored and hosted by I Am Beautiful Movement to ensure that every girl receives a memorable experience. Toyia has two children; Destini Jordan, 17 and Jaden Jordan, 16.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. I would say support is the biggest struggle because you see the vision God gave you but sometimes others don’t see it, such as family and friends. All of our events are free because we want to offer girls a variety of experiences or something they may never get a chance to see or be apart of…Getting people and businesses to sow into the ministry is so challenging at times, but God always makes a way.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
We are a non-profit organization, who caters to girls in the East Texas Areas/Communities by hosting free events such as workshops, festivals, giving away prom dresses, try to meet the needs of our young ladies and building confidence. I’m the founder and organizer. We are known for our annual workshop. Part of my testimony is I was able to build I Am Beautiful Movement from the ground up without the necessary funds some are blessed with. All I had was a vision, a dream and went for it! What sets us apart from others is our consistency to continue to be a pillar in the community by providing information and building our young ladies up one girl at a time.
What were you like growing up?
As a younger girl, I always loved taking photos, fashion and I wish I had something like I Am Beautiful Movement growing up…I was shy as a child unless I knew you. I was a cheerleader and ran track in high school. Even though I was shy, I loved being in front of people. Crafting and creating has been a big part of my life. My mom died when I was 16, so I shut down a lot and didn’t allow people to get close to me. As a child/teenager I always enjoyed helping others and serving.
