Meet Laura Davis and Jonathan Garcia of KoiKoi Photography in Farmers Branch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Davis and Jonathan Garcia.

Laura and Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We have both always had a love and passion for photography and all things artistic. We have always a knack for taking photos and making skits and short films. All for fun, until about a year ago. We were goofing around one night talking about how silly yearbook photos are, how they are so forcefully posed. We ended up taking “yearbook” photos of each other and they turned out amazing. We had so much fun pretending to be professional photographers. Within the next couple of weeks, we had decided to start taking it more seriously and to make our own business.

Our name KoiKoi Photography comes from several things. The word Koi had a reoccurring presence in our lives. Our cat’s nickname is Koi, and right at the beginning when we were deciding to take it more seriously we had taken a photo of him that truly made us confident in our abilities. We decided to name our company after him because he was such a loyal and photogenic subject for us to gain skills and knowledge from. Koi also happens to mean perseverance in adversity as well as courage. As well as two Koi’s represent Passionate Love and the duality of life and opposing forces, Yin and Yang.

We quickly gained lots of knowledge and people loved working with us because we see things differently and have such a genuine passion and appreciation for what we do.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The start was kind of slow due to not having the most up to date or relevant technology to match our skill levels. However, we have always made due with what we had. I remember trying to make lighting for portrait style photos that we fashioned out of an old lamp, poster board, and duct tape! It worked! Slowly we have been able to get more and more things.

Right when things really started to get busy for us… I’m sure anyone can guess what happened. Coronavirus. All of the sudden people canceled on us left and right. Recently, people have been starting to reach out more. We are always cautious, but we just want to help people remember they’re important moments forever!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with KoiKoi Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are a Duo of Professional Photographer and Videographers. We specialize in highlighting the finer points of humanity. What sets us apart is our background in the service industry and how we apply that excellent customer service to our business and how we communicate with our clients. Another thing that sets us apart is that we both see things in very different ways and we work extremely well together. We like to get a unique perspective. We push each other to get better and BE better.

Not to mention we are two photographers for the price of one!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plans for the future is for one, keep learning! We want to know how to do ALL things photography and videography. And not just know how but be GOOD at it. We would love to work some bigger events (If we could ever get a vaccine for Covid-19) and do more charity work.

We love giving photo sessions away for free to people who maybe can’t afford it but deserve professional photos to remember their special moment. Or to organizations that we think are doing amazing things for example Mike Crum over a 4DWN and his Urban Farm to help combat the food desert in South Dallas. We plan to go take photos for him and his program very soon.

Pricing:

  • All shoots start at about $80 an hour but are really a case by case thing.
