Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Furr.
Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Austin in 2009 to attend The University of Texas Austin for grad school. After getting my Master’s degree I bounced around PR & Advertising agencies. In 2015 I felt brave and decided to go off on my own. I began my consulting business Lollipop Social Media with just one client and a dream. Fast forward to 2019 and I’m still enjoying my work helping companies cultivate a strong presence on a variety of social platforms.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I began I didn’t realize all the work that goes into running a small business. I’ve learned so many skills including bookkeeping, web design, graphic design and beyond. My favorite thing about the social media landscape is that it’s always changing and I’m always learning something new. A big challenge is getting new clients and explaining the value of social media for companies. Luckily almost all of my work comes from word-of-mouth which is really great.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Lollipop Social Media is a small social media consultancy. I help businesses create content and optimize to cultivate a strong presence on a variety of social platforms. I have been working with the Austin non-profit Austin Pets Alive! for several years and I’m really proud of the work I do there. I think oftentimes social media can get a negative perception but it can also be used for good and that’s what I’m the most proud of. I also enjoy speaking on panels and recently helped out with the Amplify Austin giving day.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The social media scene is constantly changing! Every year there’s a new platform to learn. I think Instagram is still growing a lot and I’m interested to see how and if companies use newer apps like TikTok. I believe the Facebook trend is slowing down with fewer users. I can’t wait to see where we are in 10 years.
