Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Langley.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a young girl I always wanted to be a model. I remember my mom asking if I could walk like a model and I would walk in the living room and she would critique me.
From then on it was just a dream of mine. As I got older and was in junior high school I just remember girls being mean to me and making fun of my look. They would always call me the skinny big lip girl. So, for a while, I thought I was not pretty. Even as I got into high school I was experiencing the same thing and this was in a new town at a new school. So, it was like my dream of becoming a model slowly began to fade away.
Eventually, I began to see my beauty. When I was 25 and one of my friend’s sister tagged my name on social media. There was a designer looking for models for her upcoming show. I had just gotten off of work and really didn’t feel like going, and besides, I’m not a model what was going through my head. When I got home I read the post again and wanted to see if it was even worth it. So, when I looked at all the details and saw the time I rushed out of the house. It was approximately 80 girls there for the castings, which made me think ” what am I doing?”
The next day I received the email that I had been selected and my career as an aspiring model took off from there. I began following different local designers and photographers so that I could be in the know about all things modeled based in the DFW area. I then began doing promo modeling for some promoters, which lead me to meet a bunch of amazing people that were in the industry. So, it was like every casting that I went on I was getting selected, which may me want to go harder.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest obstacles is knowing that a there are companies that only want to work with certain people. Sometimes it’s not how good you are, but who you know. it was hard for me to understand that and a lot of times I would get angry and upset about it. Until I realized no matter what I had to continue to be the best of myself that I could be.
Laura Ashley – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a model and I am in connection with a Photography studio by the name of SolRac Photography, with the head photographer being Carlos Vincent. From this studio, I do model training and I also host model workshops for young girls who are looking to get into the industry. I also have one on one meetings with models who are looking to revamp or change their look and what type of modeling they’d like to get into.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel as though success is based on self. No one can define success, but yourself. I don’t compete with others, because we don’t all have the same goals. So how can I compete with someone who is on a totally different path as myself? So, of course, I made feel as though I’ve reached a certain level of achievements that deems successful to me, but someone else may look at it as if I’m doing ok for myself, but I could be doing better.
Success in my eyes is doing better than the year prior. Doing better than the last shoot I did.
