Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Liu.
Laura, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
A little about me… I’m a Texas transplant, having spent all my early years in the lovely farming state of Nebraska, I moved to the North Dallas area nearly ten years ago. I’m the wife to an amazing husband and mother to three young, rambunctious little boys. My childhood was spent in nature. In spring and summer, there were ditches filled with wildflowers, fruit picking and hours spent in the vegetable garden. The golden fields of fall gave way to snowy winters and an icy wonderland. A perfect place to form a ripe imagination, brimming with adventure & fairy tales. I adore infusing my photographer with rich, natural elements.
When my oldest was born almost nine years ago, I was struck by how fast time passes and how precious this world of childhood truly is. Something down the lines of the saying “the days are long, but the years are short.” I rediscovered my passion of photography as a way to help freeze time, if only for a moment. As time went on, I discovered that I also wanted to help other families to do just the same.
My passion is capturing the love that families share: the laughter, the frowns and all the moments in between. If one of my portraits successfully pulls at your heartstrings and brings you back to that moment in time, I consider that a success.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think that many artists struggle to find their voice when they are starting out. However, once I began looking past the perceived imperfections of a photograph (i.e. the tears, the muddy knees, the chocolate in the corners of little mouths), I began to notice the raw beauty of the moment.
The poet Ben Okri once said the following which I now very much hold to be true: “The fact of storytelling hints at a fundamental human unease, hints at human imperfection. Where there is perfection there is no story to tell.”

Family connections are what makes my world go round. From the love (and irritation) shared by siblings, to the affectionate lean-in that a wife gives to her husband, to the sheer joy expressed when holding a newborn, I strive to capture it all. If you’ve seen my work, I hope that between the golden sunshine and the beautiful, natural backdrops that you can see the whole world spinning around the one special family I’m with.
