Meet Lauren Bloom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Bloom.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At a very, very young age, I fell in love with photography. Back then, I would mostly carry around a disposable camera everywhere taking pictures of all my favorite things- mostly portraits of my horses, dogs, favorite stuffed animals. I also loved documenting all of our trips. I used to make photo albums of all my pictures and I still love looking at them today. Having photos as memories of your life is such a gift.

I never really considered photography as a career. Learning how to use a film camera, or professional DSLR really intimidated me for a long time. I was involved in many activities growing up that kept my attention. In high school, I was in journalism and always admired the students who were taking pictures of our school. I don’t remember there being a photography course in my high school, but if there had been one I know I would have taken it.

When I was in college was really when photography started really getting popular due to social media. I started finding more resources online about it and I really became passionate about it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I view photography like any relationship, there are ups and downs along the way. Photography is an extension of me now and part of my voice. I don’t think I’ll ever stop taking pictures.

Please tell us about Lauren Bloom Photography.
I specialize in intimate portraits, lifestyle photography, and sprinkle in a few weddings here and there. I am also currently really interested in pursuing more food photography. I love food and I am always cooking in my own kitchen at home, so it seems like a natural path for me.

I think I am most known for my simple, vintage-inspired pictures infused with natural light. I use a mix of digital and vintage film cameras to create my work. I love film the most though and those little imperfections film has make my heart so happy. I love simple backdrops and focus on simple, everyday beauty, but in a classic way. I don’t care much about current photography trends at all. I try to let art, things in my own life, nature, books, etc inspire me to create the images I do. I grew up figure skating and still find certain skaters and programs really inspire me.

I am most proud of when I can take an image for someone, perhaps it’s of them, their company they have put their heart and soul into, or maybe it’s of their family… but if they love it and it is a photo they will treasure, I am very, very proud of that.

I try to run my business more like a small boutique would. I book mostly by word of mouth these days. I like to think I am more than just a photographer, but rather an artist and a friend with the people I end up working with, especially if I am being hired for a wedding.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My mom and I riding with the windows down on a hot day in our old Chevy truck blasting Whitney Houston after a day spent with our horses.
