Lauren, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started spray tanning when I was 13 years old. I am a redhead so I don’t tan in the sun and am susceptible to skin cancer. I always wished there was something on the market that wasn’t orange and streaky and didn’t have all of the harsh chemicals. When I found the organic solution I use now, I knew I wanted to share it with other people that wanted to be tan without all the bad parts that usually come along with it. I wanted to be a part of the reason people felt even more confident and beautiful. When people look good, they feel good, therefore will be good, and there is a sort of ripple effect that comes from kindness. So, two years ago, I started custom spray tanning people with my organic solution and haven’t looked back! It is an amazing alternative to harmful UV rays and other tanning solutions with harsh chemicals!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me. I was definitely naive in the beginning thinking that ‘oh if I open a business, people will just come!’. It’s a little more complicated than that, for sure. And there is just so much that goes into starting a business that you don’t even think of, even small businesses!
Almost every dime you make goes back into the business at first and it can be very tough. But it’s worth it to see the smile on my client’s faces.
On top of that, there are definitely people that laugh at you or doubt you, which can be very discouraging. But, all you can do is keep going and prove them wrong!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ocean Glow story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Mobile Organic Airbrush Tan Artist.
So, I go to the client, anywhere in the DFW Metroplex, which is hard to find these days. I find that working and/or stay at home moms really benefit from my services. Either way, it’s extremely hard for them to getaway. But that being said, my clientele is all over the map, age-wise. Honestly, I think people get tired of getting out in the DFW traffic and it’s nice to just have a relaxing evening at home and get a spray tan while binging on Netflix!
We are known for our organic tanning solution. It is made in Venice, CA and I personally used to get spray tanned with this solution out there and absolutely loved everything about it. It is honestly the best I have tried on the market, and trust me I have tried hundreds over the years.
Not only is it amazing because it’s organic but it doesn’t stink, it doesn’t look streaky or orange, and if you moisturize every day, it fades evenly and naturally.
As I said before, I enjoy making my clients feel beautiful and confident. It’s literally an immediate mood-booster and keeps you feeling that way for the 7-10 days that it lasts!
Also, I have found that both men and women love the fact that I am a mobile company. Spray tanning for some people is already a little uncomfortable and vulnerable so getting to stay home and relax and get tanned in the comfort of their own home is a major relief and plus!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next few years, I will definitely be getting a brick and mortar. A place where people can conveniently stop in and get a spray and maybe unwind with a complimentary beverage! I definitely want to keep my mobile side of the business as well since so many people benefit from that!
I am currently exploring the healing and wellness option of adding CBD to my services. Where clients could have the option of adding it to their spray tan! I think that would be a pretty cool option to have considering all of the benefits of CBD.
I would also love to create my own line of before and aftercare products. The before and aftercare of a spray tan is so important and I would love to be able to contribute to that. But that’s way down the line!
