Meet Leah Misty and David Tietje of Thai Love Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Misty and David Tietje.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Leah and David. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
David here. I had been teaching Yoga since 1996 when a friend invited me to a Vedic Thai Yoga Massage workshop she was organizing. The teacher’s name was “Mukti” Michael Buck and he was from Florida and I said OK. That workshop was 3 days that changed the course of my life. I realized I wanted to do what he was doing, which was traveling around and teaching this amazing bodywork/massage! I went to massage school and took my first (of many!) vacations/intensives, in Florida, learning this beautiful and ancient art. I practiced and practiced, and then I asked a friend if I could teach a 3-hour class in his home, where he and I were having a monthly Men’s meeting. He said Yes and now I’ve been teaching it for over 5 years.

Leah attended the second class I taught in my friends home in 2012. She had already been to one of my intro classes that I taught before an Ecstatic Dance. When class was over I noticed how cute Leah was as she waved goodbye. I knew she did Energy work and Reiki and so I contacted her to set up a trade. That trade was the first time I had a really WOW Energy session. We connected many times and eventually decided to move in together. Leah became my “teaching assistant” and also went to massage school, and we both went together to Florida to study with Mukti. We are now partners in everything and although I do most of the teaching Leah is quickly becoming a Marketing Pro and is invaluable to our business, and to my Heart!

One day we were thinking of what we could name our business. Several years before I had previously chosen Amrita Healing Arts, and we agreed that needed to change. We knew we wanted the words “Thai” and ‘Yoga” somewhere in there and I’m not sure how it happened but I simply said the words THAI LOVE YOGA, and after a few minutes our name was born! Well. I was afraid and certain it would not be available (because it was so perfect!) but we searched the internet to see… and I could hardly believe it wasn’t being used! We needed a logo and Leah created this lovely, hand-drawn Heart and made in her favorite color, Green.

We have been presenters at the Sedona Yoga Festival for the past 5 years, and also the last 2 years in Houston for the Texas Yoga Conference. We have traveled to California, Colorado, Asheville, NC., New York, and Thailand to teach and play, and we are going back to Thailand in January 2019 for over 2 weeks, and taking anyone who wants to go with us! In 2016 we spent probably the most fun Month of our lives in Thailand and we want to share it with others. That is what our lives are about now. Come and join us for a class or a trip!

Has it been a smooth road?
Our biggest challenge has been knowing very little about business and marketing. Also, it’s not in our nature to be very focused, consistent or high energy with our business (in other words, we are not type A personality!), which has likely caused us to move a little slower on the success meter.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Since we are a committed couple and have lots of fun teaching together, we really enjoy meeting other couples in our classes. The Mystical Relationship workshop is what we created from the variety of different practices we’ve each experienced. This class is designed for anyone, but especially couples, to find more Connection, Fun and Magic in any relationship. It includes Laughter Yoga, Sacred Space Ritual, Affirmation Circle, and Vedic Thai Yoga Bodywork… We’ve presented this course and others at several Yoga festivals including Sedona, Dallas and Houston.

Our other main teaching is 2, 3 or 5 day workshops on Vedic Thai Yoga Bodywork, an ancient form of massage originating in Thailand. These courses are introductory, and they also are a path to certification. One thing that sets us apart is that we also teach a monthly practice in our home studio for anyone to attend, and it’s also FREE for life for any of our graduates of a 2 day or longer course.

We teach, travel, cook, and play together, and I believe our relationship is what sets us apart from others because we know the difficulties, the fun, and the amazing growth of it all.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, although some marketing skills (or friends who have them!) can always help.
