Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Amber Galipp-Leger.
Dr. Galipp-Leger, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field helping people. I always thought that path would be the traditional medical route so much that I worked the ER as a tech and was studying for my MCAT in college.
But in my senior year of college, I had what I refer to as a “God moment” of redirection. I came home for a break and spoke with my chiropractor who had been seeing me and my family since I was a child. It was in that conversation I realized I was supposed to be a chiropractor myself. As a young athlete, I had seen a chiropractor for years. I discovered the migraine headaches I had suffered with since age five were gone and I no longer had severe pain anymore. I had always trusted in my body’s innate ability to heal itself. This premise left me to change my career path forever and not look back. I grew up in a household where my dad owned his own business and being my own boss was always my plan. Chiropractic gave me that freedom.
While in chiropractic school, I was fortunate enough to go on a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic and Haiti shortly after a hurricane hit. This trip changed the course of my education and career. While there we had the opportunity to serve the local community trying to rebuild their lives. I was still in school at the time and had been very frustrated with my skills. I remember going down to the beach and crying because I felt as though I was failing to help anyone. That was when I had another “God moment” and realized it wasn’t about me. It has never been and never will be. I learned that day that as long as you are serving from your heart to heal and help others, your only outcome will be success.
Up until that day, I had never adjusted a baby. I was so nervous but I knew this little guy needed my help. When I returned from the beach with my new mindset, I looked up to see a long line of mothers with their children waiting for me. From that day forward, I knew my life’s work was to serve the pediatric community. When you serve babies, you learn to serve their sweet mommas too. This set a whole new plan in motion for my practice. I began taking all the classes I could to learn about all things pregnancy and pediatrics. So here I am, many years later, serving my community with my heart and enjoying every day I get to go to the office and help change lives.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any business owner will ever tell you it is an easy smooth road. There are so many ups and downs on a daily basis, but is it very rewarding at the end of the day! The first struggle I faced was getting the doors open. It took much longer than I had planned. Once we finally opened, I worked really hard on building a referral based business. I knew early on that women are such a powerful source of support and encouragement. I wanted to begin building my own tribe of women in my community. My team and I have worked hard to create a space where families can come to be supported and loved for who they are. My vision has been to have an office where moms can come when they are having a bad day to be surrounded by other women for encouragement and healing. There will always be the day to day struggles but overall it has been a beautiful ride thus far.
Please tell us about Legacy Family Chiropractic.
Legacy Family Chiropractic is a family-focused office. Many assume we will only see you if you are a child or pregnant, but that is not the case. While that does seem to be the majority of our patient population, we often have to tell people we do treat men as well. It is quite funny, but we find many of our male patients really enjoy the chaos that is often found with kids running all around the office. They bring such a fun and high energy to the office that you can’t help but laugh when you walk in. We try to create a fun environment where kids are welcome to be kids and run around. We don’t want our office to feel scary and stale. Since we have a pregnancy and pediatric-focused office we have made it a point to include kids in the experience.
We often have moms call the office to ask if we are child-friendly. We never want a mom or dad to feel like they can’t bring their child along to their appointments. Usually after a few visits, we find the kids will hop right up on the table for their turn. This is exactly the vision I had when I opened my office, a place where the whole family can come to be happier and healthier by just being under care. I would say we have more than accomplished that and that makes me very proud. We also host “Mama Meetups” in the office occasionally. It is a great way to get together to encourage new moms to make friends with other women going through the same things they are. We have brought in other providers who hold birth education classes in the office and we also have a nursing room in office where we encourage collaborative care with lactation consultants and chiropractic to help women learn to breastfeed better.
I believe there are many things that separate our office apart. In addition to the family-friendly atmosphere we have created, we also work hard to bring the latest information to our office and offer things such as craniosacral therapy through dynamic body balancing, BirthFit, and spinning babies. I am also Webster certified along with traditional chiropractic care. Taking the extra steps to be certified in these things has gone a long way in helping people in our community. We have expanded our knowledge to be able to help all those who seek care.
