Today we’d like to introduce you to Leia Johnson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from a family with a long history of artists, however, I didn’t pursue art until I was in college. I was enrolled in courses for a double major in Psychology and Spanish and decided to take one art class as an elective. That one art class forever altered the course of my path as I changed majors from Psychology and Spanish to Graphic Design. I took several Photography courses in college and have always had a passion for it.
Shortly after the birth of my first child, I realized the impact that a photograph could have on a parent. The emotion that I felt as I viewed the first images of my son in the hospital was unparalleled. I knew at that moment that I wanted to create images that were that powerful.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not always been smooth. At times it has certainly been difficult to juggle raising children and owning a small business with unconventional hours. During my busy fall and winter season, for example, it is always difficult to manage my increased workload while still being able to enjoy the holidays with my husband and children.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Leia Johnson Portrait Design story. Tell us more about the business.
Leia Johnson Portrait Design specializes in family portrait photography. There are admittedly many other businesses in the area that specialize in the same type of photography.
What I believe makes us different is that each photo is meticulously hand edited and curated to be a unique work of art. I do not edit using the same techniques on each photograph, I treat each photograph individually depending on what I think would suit the image the best.
This takes a lot more time than other editing processes, and I believe that this sets me apart from other family portrait photographers.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe that I was very lucky early on in my career to have found a group of clients that believed in my work and have continued to support my business each year. I owe a great part of my success to those clients that were willing to take a chance on me before I had an established brand.
