Today we’d like to introduce you to Levi Hughes.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Yeah, so I grew up in the small town of Justin, TX near the Texas Motor Speedway. Much of my childhood was spent roaming around outside in the fields and creek near our house, climbing trees or the roof of our house. I was the youngest of three children. My brother and sister were too busy to play with me so I learned how to entertain myself. This solitude gave birth to my imagination and sense of adventure.
Whenever I was not outside, I was playing video games. Sonic was definitely my favorite. The fast pace of the game mixed with the cool edgy 90’s character design really spoke to me as a child. So, I began to draw sonic all the time. I learned all the shapes that made up Sonic’s design by repeatedly redrawing him over and over again. This, I believe, is where my career as an artist began.
Please tell us about your art.
My art spans across different media and styles that mainly hold a graphic style. Recently I worked on a simple black and white mural of the town courthouse for a local restaurant. Before that I worked on a digital illustration commission in the style of Disneyesque characters. I have also been commissioned to design hand lettering for wedding invitations, baby showers, and tattoos. As you can see, I like to explore.
My current favorite medium I work in has been cut paper illustrations of some of my favorite video games of recent. Cut paper illustrations for me is creating three dimensional illustrations from cutting out the shapes of the forms from color cardstock. This allows me to play with the concepts of dimension, depth, space and shadow that is traditionally an illusion on the surface of a 2D plane. I also love the tactile feel of working with the paper. There is just something about the feel of a good quality paper that gives it a richness.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
You can always make time to create. If you stay persistent you will eventually cover those financial struggles with art. Everyone takes their own path so just keep at it.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best place online to view my work is my Instagram @lvhg. The mural I just finished is up at 940’s Kitchen & Cocktails in Denton, TX.
