Meet Lexi Meadows of Lexi Meadows Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Meadows.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey into photography starts with the nostalgia of my dad’s manual, black and white, 35 mm film Canon. It was a decade and a half ago, so maybe the film camera was not so nostalgic, but digital cameras were already coming on the scene. My Dad and I shared a passion for National Geographic magazine and I had a dream to become a photographer for them one day! With that old camera, I learned the essentials of shooting manually which as continued to serve me well even into the digital age. Good composition and understanding your equipment surpasses the technology changes and trends. I would like to say that I’ve been pursuing my dream over the last decade and a half, but I took a side step to pursue a degree and career in Biomedical Engineering and software development. I guess you could say, I’ve been able to flex and exercise both the right and left sides of my brain! Well into my career in software development, I was blessed to grow from an individual into a family of 4. Bring those little people into the mix transformed my life and I wanted to be able to capture all of their precious, candid, and real personalities and details. My two little people brought me back into the world of photography and I’ve learned that photographing newborns, babies, and toddlers is a lot like wildlife photography. It’s a bit unpredictable, exciting, rewarding, and adventurous all at the same time!

Another major shift came when my house was robbed. YES! Robbed–it’s unfortunate, but I took the opportunity to make lemonade out of lemons. All of my photography and computer equipment was stolen and I turned that devastating event into an opportunity to upgrade to professional level equipment. Three months later, I quick my day job and went full time into family and newborn photography. I am so grateful to make this career and I’m also thankful for the 2 major shifts that drove me back to my early passion that started with that old film 35mm Canon. I still shoot 35mm and Canon, by the way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
You know that pause you take before jumping into the pool for the first time after winter is over? The feeling that you know you want to jump, you know you’ll enjoy the swim, but that initial plunge could be shocking and a little uncomfortable? That’s kind of what it felt like to leave the security of my engineering management job to be a mom-trepreneur photographer! There was definitely risk involved with 2 children still in pre-school, a mortgage, and family goals to meet. With the total support of my husband and family plus the strength of my faith; knowing that ultimately God is in control, I was able to make the initial plunge! There has been a lot of learning and late nights along the way, but I’m doing what I love plus finding more balance in my life!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Of course, I could not have made this transition and had success thus far without the support of my husband. He is an encourager and an enabler who continually points me in the right direction when I’m discouraged and helps me remember to celebrate even the smallest victories! I also signed up with a mentor who had been in this same field in my first 2 months as a company. Julia Lauren Photography provided essential resources and encouragement to get off the ground running!
