Today we’d like to introduce you to Lia Graham.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started writing songs when I was 13 and haven’t stopped since. I wrote some in high school, but it wasn’t until I moved to Denton for college that I really started performing my own songs in public. Writing songs is an outlet for me to understand certain feelings or emotions. This past summer, I had a goal for myself to post a new cover or original every week. I called it Song Saturday, and you can find those on my YouTube channel. My love for music and songwriting grew rapidly over the summer because of how immersed I was in my music and music around me. It only continues to grow as I do more. I have recently started recording my own songs in hopes of releasing an album soon. The spring semester of my freshman year, I was looking for a community of musicians to join at the University of North Texas where I attend. To my surprise, there weren’t a lot of options for me as I was not majoring or minoring in music. That’s when I decided to start a guitar club on campus with the goal of creating a community of musicians regardless of major, skill level, or genre. This is our third semester as a club, and the response has been amazing. I have met so many of my close friends through the club and have created a space for others to meet new friends as well. Since then, I have been playing at various open mics, restaurants, and my favorite venue yet, Harvest House in Denton. Seeing people enjoy my songs has been such an uplifting experience. I hope to continue to help people through my music and passion for bringing people together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think every musician has to find their voice before they get really good. Once you understand your sound, you can use it to better fulfill your passion. I have never been a very loud person. I used to be very self-conscious and overly anxious about everything. This really affected my confidence. When I first started singing, I had to be told to be louder or get into the mic constantly. I used to think I just wasn’t capable of being a loud singer, which meant I wasn’t a good singer in my head. I compared myself to singers around me who could naturally belt or be as loud as they needed to be. Needless to say, practice helps. I understand my voice a lot better now. I got comfortable with my soft voice and figured out how it made me stand out. I have built up my confidence over time, and my voice has become a lot stronger as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My music is full of emotion. I have songs about heartbreak, songs about love, and songs about having sushi and coffee for lunch. Most of my songs are created from a need to make sense of strong feelings or emotions. I love poetry and use a lot of poetic language to try and explain what I am feeling. I think my music is honest and genuine. I write my songs for myself, but it is really cool to see how other people relate to them.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Dallas because it presents so many opportunities for growing artists. The community I have found here is unlike any others I have experienced. People are concentrated on making connections and growing their support systems. This not only benefits all individually but the music industry in Dallas as a whole.
