Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Liqueur.
Lily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started burlesque in 2010–when I was in the midst of getting a theatre degree, 200 pounds, and being told by the dean of students that I wouldn’t make it as an entertainer. Fast forward seven years, and I’m dancing on the stage of B.B. Kings on 42nd Street in NYC.
I began my career as an avid burlesque fan. I couldn’t find my place in theatre, discovered all the body positivity and empowered women in burlesque, and was hooked. I performed in a few dive bars, black box theatres, local theatres—anyone that would have me. I began producing and teaching in Norfolk, VA, where the closest local burlesque was an hour and a half away. After touring around the country as a stripping Daenerys Targaryen (with George R.R. Martin’s blessing), I felt I had reached my potential in VA. I packed up my bags to teach and perform for a troupe in Dallas, TX. After two years, I made the choice to pursue myself full-time and now work as a free agent around the country.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitively NOT, haha.
Just to give you a quick list of some obstacles: going out of town (and state) to attend classes, introducing venue owners to burlesque, attending my first festivals and learning that not all of my friends will be happy for my success the hardest ways possible, having shows canceled because of ABC laws, losing a partner who considered my career and my aspirations unacceptable, moving across country, being misled personally and professionally, having my car repossessed, and of course everyone’s high school nemesis and beyond: the rumor mill.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a burlesque performer, costumer, and makeup artist best known for being a short-haired cutie with a big ol’ booty!
I specialize in the art of the tease with my personal style, which I like to call “trashic” (trashy classic). I am actually most proud of that. Thanks to years of competition dance teams and my theatre degree, I have been on stage all my life and have been able to use that time to figure out who I really am as a performer, and I think it’s something really special.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans are to keep growing, learning, traveling, and teaching as a performer! I have been accepted to some exciting festivals already for 2020, so I am looking forward to national (and international) travel opportunities. I’ve always wanted to headline a big weekender event like that, so hopefully that is on the horizon for this Tall Drink of Tease!
There are a couple of dream routines I want to get onstage in the next year or two, but those are contingent on money and prop-makers.
One day, in the far-away future, I hope to own a burlesque lounge where we do shows every night and serve great food and have a live band!
