Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Dodge.
Linda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It was a labor of love.
I have always been hands-on and creative, so when my daughter married 3 years ago, I really wanted the wedding to be personal and very special for her.
Then, of course, like any new bride to be, we started searching Pinterest for ideas. I was intrigued by the paper flower walls and could picture the beautiful couple standing in front of it during the ceremony. Surprisingly, it took my daughter a few weeks to be on board with the idea.
I called my friend Charlotte and asked if she was up for a challenge; neither of us had ever made paper flowers. As crazy as it sounds for a first-time project, I wanted the wall to be 8’ tall and 12’ wide. My husband designed and built the wall.
We designed and cut and glued hundreds of flowers over a period of 6 months.
The results: a beautiful ceremony backdrop and I discovered I had a talent for this particular art. Then, a month after the wedding, I sold the wall to a wedding planner and didn’t make another paper flower for 3 years.
After leaving my job 6 months ago, my family and friends encouraged me to pick up paper and scissors again. This is how Linda Grace Paper Florist came to be.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a new business, it is still a struggle to get my work in front of the people who will buy it. So, marketing is my biggest challenge.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Linda Grace Paper Florist – what should we know?
My business isn’t about mass production of paper flowers. It is about creating something special for you; whether it is for a new nursery, a child’s room, baby or bridal shower or a wedding. I love the elegance and simplicity of white flowers but it is fun working with colors too.
I am most proud of my 8’x8’ white paper flower wall which is available for rental for weddings and events. This wall is designed to allow the planner to incorporate their color palette with the white flowers.
I pride myself on originality and attention to detail on every flower I create.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I love creating a garden out of paper flowers that will put a smile on my client’s face. I’m motivated to come up with new designs every day because of the creative aspect of making the flowers is what I enjoy the most.
