Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Fultz.
Lindsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was a AAA level ice hockey player through high school and faced many injuries. If there was one thing I could go back and include in my history as an athlete, it would be chiropractic. I simply didn’t know how much preventative care and performance-based work chiropractor’s had to offer. I was 20 when I was introduced to this field of healthcare as I received my first adjustment. The following year I wrapped up my Kinesiology studies at the University of North Texas and transferred to Parker University’s College of Chiropractic.
Through my first year or so, I had the goal of working in the sports medicine world; it felt like my natural next step. As I continued with academics and my scope of knowledge was expanded, a new passion was ignited and my vision was born. This vision was in the arena of functional nutrition. Nutrition is an essential pillar of health for not only athletes but all varieties of people. So, I changed directions and went full steam ahead into learning about physiology, nutrition, biochemistry, and lab analysis. I now see patients in all walks of life who want to feel and perform better, however that looks for them.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting through the nearly four years of Chiropractic school and an internship, including board exams, practicals, and licensing, was the easy part. I was fortunate enough to be one of the selected students in my last few months as an intern to participate in a community-based program. This meant that instead of being on campus, I worked in an established practice. This allowed me to see the real world of business. I impressed the boss enough to be hired on full time after graduation and this was an amazing opportunity. I saw hundreds of patients a week and started to learn how to set up my own practice.
Fast forward about two years and I was ready to take the leap and open up my office. That leap is where the real challenges begin. It’s comfortable and safe working for someone else. Putting your own name on the door and taking on that responsibility can be scary. I would say this road has been mostly smooth with just a pothole or two thrown in there. Thankfully my potholes haven’t been fatal, nor have they caused any real damage, but they have made me cautious as I drive on ahead. Credit is also due to my amazing husband who has been by my side since the beginning of graduate school. I lean on him and he is able to steer me to avoid those potholes sometimes.
Please tell us about Complement Functional Wellness & Chiropractic.
I’m a board-certified Chiropractor located in North Dallas who specializes in functional nutrition. This means I analyze labs, most often blood work, and look at how a patient’s physiology is functioning. I look at these numbers through a lens of optimal performance, not simply the lack of disease. It is my opinion that we should all want to live life like a candle: the candle’s flame stays evenly lit and vibrant until it burns completely down and with a quick flicker, it’s existence is gone. I don’t mean that to sound morbid, but more as an image for how we should all thrive to maintain our cognitive ability, mobility, and general health until our final days on this planet. I want to help my patients achieve this lifestyle by affecting those things within our control as it relates to nutrition. I am proud to serve patient’s from all walks of life, whether it be the new grandmother who wants to stay spry and play with the grandkids or the young professional looking to decrease their stress and gain balance in their life.
While I do see this whole variety of people, I would say I’m possibly more known for helping females. Not to say that I don’t like to see our male counterparts, but I connect with women and some of the unique struggles that come along with our physiology. I’ve had my own fair share of personal experiences with birth control use, weight fluctuations, anxiety, pregnancy and the birth of my child, and hormonal changes. All of these things (and more) are so hard to navigate. I believe having a doctor with that personal experience can make a big difference. As a patient in my office, I bring that experience as well as my specialized training. My patients receive highly individualized care, including my time with them one-on-one. We sit together as we unravel the health history and piece together the specific game plan. In this day and age, I think this type of specialized care is what sets me apart from others.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There have been numerous influential people who have helped me get to where I am today. First and foremost, my husband deserves a big pat on the back. We started dating just as I was beginning chiropractic school. He spent a lot of late nights running through flashcards and practice exams! We married shortly after I graduated and he has been my biggest fan as I’ve worked my way through my career, not to mention taking some time to stay home with our daughter.
My core group of friends from my graduating class, who I now fondly call colleagues, definitely deserve credit as well. I’m still very close to many of them and we continue to rely on each other for help with the care of a patient, billing or coding questions, and anything business. I’ll end on my roommate who I lived with throughout my time at Parker. She graduated about a year before me and I still lean on her frequently. She remains to be one of the smartest people I know. She was and still is a mentor. There are honestly too many to count, but the above people are the “greatest hits” version!
