Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Ganter.
Lindsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Entrepreneurship was never on my radar back when I first had my children. However, being a young(ish) stay-at-home mom of three tots almost rapid-fire, I found myself quickly sinking into the nearly inevitable mom hole of “losing myself and my identity” as a former sassy and free-thinking woman. I had morphed into an exhausted, bun-donning, goldfish cracker in my bra wearing, bum wiping mombie.
While my soul loved and was grateful for being at home and raising my blessings, I needed an outlet that did not involve mac n cheese and Elmo. I somehow slipped into a self-taught custom cake business that ended up booming and thriving for seven years! Thanks to word of mouth and social media leveraging and not a penny into advertising, I was busy with 4-5 orders per week. Eventually, I hung up the apron as I was evolving and ready for something more, but still in line with scratching the artsy itch.
Along came my network marketing cosmetics business where I earned top leader in just a hair under three years. During that time of growth, I rediscovered my passion for makeup and realized I had an untapped talent for makeup artistry, generally speaking, of course, but then I quickly tripped into the realm of special effects and illusion makeup. Huge shout-out to social media for providing a platform for me to share my self-taught creative content of special effects. I would create and record and share on social media every day if I could, but motherhood and my main makeup services business are to be tended to first. But I squeeze in my passion as much as I can in order to keep the embers glowing until I can run with it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anything worth having comes with a rubbled and winding road. Balancing motherhood and the thousands of hats we wear as moms is the most considerable difficulty when entrepreneurship is in progress. However, I am thankful for the obstacles and setbacks and frustrations as they all have taught me fortitude, patience, and introspection. I might still be roaming the house as a “Mombie” without it all.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Two words: makeup artist. While many may scoff at that line of work, it’s not as easy as it looks. Five(ish) years ago, I realized, ‘Hey, I’m pretty darn good at this’ and it all flourished from there. Starting as self-taught (much of it born from natural instincts), I also poured my time into world-renowned makeup artists online to up my game. I have recently earned my certification in International Makeup Artistry as well as being a published makeup artist in Direct Sales Diva magazine last year. I am also a top leader in my current cosmetics network marketing company.
I thirst for creating beauty, whether it is drawing, painting, or something as simple as makeup. My passion lies in teaching willing women on how to apply cosmetics and the techniques involved, along with building confidence. I make sure to let each one of my clients know that they do NOT need makeup, but if it is one thing that helps put a little kick in their step, why not? Nothing fills my cup more than breathing fire and confidence into women who desperately need a positive force in their life.
While the majority of my work is in individual client relationships with product sales, classes, appointments for event makeovers, and one-on-one application instruction, my soul is also sparked when I park myself on the bathroom floor and video the special effects illusion makeup that I create on the easiest canvas… my own face. All self-taught as well. Let’s just say Halloween is my jam. I book a year in advance for this fun holiday! 😉 From illusions to horror to well-known commercialized characters, I am most known for transforming my face (or leg or stomach) into whatever I am in the mood to create. Many times I am inspired by other artists, as well as from a vision that evolves in my creative right brain. Special effects makeup allows me to escape the everyday humdrum of life for a few hours, music playing, video recording, creative juices flowing, makeup flying.
Once finished, I will spend a few hours in post-production video editing to whittle down anywhere from 1-3 hours of creating to a sped-up, fast-paced 3-4 minute video. While I wouldn’t consider myself viral by any means, my work has been viewed by tens of thousands. I’ve successfully branded myself on social media as the special effects artist amongst my incredible and supportive following. I am proud of myself for finding my passion and running with it! Rich is the (wo)man who is so lucky!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently, my plans are to continue to cultivate my cosmetics services through word of mouth and the insane leverage of social media. While my dream one day is to work on a set of movies/commercials/television as a Lead Makeup Artist (hopefully in special effects!), for now, I am staying local(ish) and growing my affiliations with well-known, high-end photographers as their go-to makeup artist for professional shoots. Adding to my resume of printed materials and magazines would be a definite bonus! So I will continue networking to open up all possibilities of growth.
