Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Kate.
Lindsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a baby, I was a sick little girl and only music would soothe me. I would scream uncontrollably, but when music started playing, I calmed down. At the age of 15 months, I had two emergency brain surgeries that saved my life. I was born with a Dandy Walker cyst malformation on my cerebellum that caused hydrocephalus and it was not discovered until that time. I did not walk or talk until I was almost two years old. My parents tell me that one day we were riding in the car around Christmas time and I started singing Santa Baby. I knew all the words and I was in key. I was only three years old. As I got older, I loved watching American Idol. It was my favorite show and I would go to my room and learn all the songs. When I was in the fifth grade, I told my parents I wanted to do the talent show and I wanted to sing Bennie and the Jets. I was the last act and I had everyone clapping and singing along. No one expected what came out of my mouth, even my parents. That night I met my guitarist. He was there with his wife running the talent show. I continued to do talent shows through middle school and since his wife continued to work the shows, he would come to watch. When I was in seventh grade, he invited me to come out to his gigs and sing a song or two with him. I started doing open mics around town and met a few people along the way that have played with me. Eventually, I started doing small gigs, for free at first and then it developed into an actual business. Last year I played over ninety gigs. I perform all over the Dallas /Fort Worth area but you will find me most frequently in Grapevine, Texas along Main Street and out at the lake. I perform either as a two, three or four-piece band, including an incredible acoustic guitarist, a percussionist and sometimes, depending on the venue, a bassist. I play in bars, restaurants and private parties. I just turned 16 years old and, I have had no formal training.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest challenge is that I have to turn down gigs often because my guitarist plays in a different duo band and isn’t always available. At my age, it’s hard to find band members that know all the old school music.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about what you do – what should we know?
I am a 16-year-old working musician. I sing covers from the 60’s to the early 2000s. I sing anything from rock, country, soul, alternative to even blues artists, like Nina Simone. I am honestly most proud of the fact that I can perform a four-hour gig without looking at any lyrics. My whole band and I do everything by memory. We don’t believe in staring at an iPad or sheet of paper because we are there to perform and entertain the audience. I personally know more than 300 covers in my head.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest supporter is probably my dad. He has taken a ton of time out of his personal life to book gigs and drive me to gigs. He is always there to support me. My mom comes to watch and enjoy my gigs too and help me with outfits, she’s my biggest fan. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do this at all if it weren’t for my guitarist, Pooch Amy. He has mentored me and allowed me to develop myself as a singer since I was just 14 years old. I also have a lot of local fans that will follow me around to venues and watch me grow as an artist.
