Meet Lisa Roby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Roby.

Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography runs deep in my family. My grandfather and uncle owned a studio in downtown Denton in the 80s and you would rarely catch my grandpa without a camera in his hands. My passion for photography stemmed at a young age. I was like my grandpa and had to have pictures of everything. After years of working in corporate America and feeling like I had missed my calling I took a leap of faith and chased after my dream of becoming a professional photographer. I have zero regrets and have found so much joy in getting to do what I love everyday. Hardly feels like work!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had a couple of hiccups along the way. I quit my job January of 2020 and then Covid hit the following month, I was really nervous that my business would never pick back up like before, but it did and was busier than it had ever been. I do think Covid has brought families closer together and people that had never done family pictures before were finding value in having them done. Also, as a mom of four and two of them being under two, it was and still can be a challenge to find the work/family life balance. Luckily my family has shown me lots of grace!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a natural light photographer that specializes in lifestyle families, newborns, children, and maternity photography. I love lots of movement in my photography and candid shots are my favorite. I like to capture families in their real and raw form. I will, of course, do the posed shot for grandma, but it’s not what gets my creative juices flowing. I like to make my clients feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the lens. My personality is fairly laid back and I have lots of patience when it comes to letting moments happen to get “the shot”. I’ve been told time and time again how nervous they were and how much they typically hate taking pictures, but at the end of my session, they loved it and felt so comfortable and confident. Customer service is always huge when it comes to working with clients, but also being able to deliver beautiful pictures of fleeting moments. I pride myself in being able to provide great people skills along with great work.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As far as the future of my business, I would love to open a small studio in the Denton area that other photographers could use as well. Right now, the closest studio to rent is about 25 miles away and it’s a struggle to get clients willing to travel that far for indoor shoots.
