Meet Liv (MINX) Rivera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liv (MINX) Rivera.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has always been a part of my life. Growing up, my mother was a singer-songwriter, so music was always present in our house. I remember seeing her shows and thinking that I wanted to be up on that stage someday. However, it wasn’t until recently that I felt confident enough to pursue it fully.

I always considered music as a hobby rather than a career path, I did not want to go the route of a starving artist, yet, despite my constant efforts to achieve a stable career through college, music kept calling to me. In the summer of 2017, I decided it was time. After taking a medical leave of absence from Baylor University and moving back home to LA, I unexpectedly got picked up by a modeling agency. Modeling helped to not only build my confidence but also to show me that an artistic career, though sporadic, was extremely rewarding and indeed possible.

Through modeling, I met Jay, the model, and videographer that would later introduce me to my entire team. Jay and I met at a hair show and bonded over music, I showed him a few songs I recorded and produced on my phone and he really liked them, and told me how his dream was to be behind the camera instead of in front of it. II said let’s actually do it and a month later he introduced me to DJ S!sma and Thomas Massarany. Then I met Devine and we were just the dream team from then on. Now two years later, we’ve made several music videos, begun production on multiple projects, and are three songs away from completing my debut album! I am MINX and I can’t wait to share my art with the world.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, there have been plenty of ups and downs including moving states, delayed deadlines, and singles not doing as well as we’d hoped due to poor marketing. It’s difficult to do everything by yourself, even though my team is amazing it can be difficult to navigate the tumultuous waters of the business side of the music industry. It is no doubt that we all have the talent, it’s just meeting the right people, getting music to fans, and making sure the marketing is on point. That being said, this is the best time to be an independent artist with so many resources at our disposal. We are resilient and strong and every mistake teaches us how to better improve ourselves. I am confident that this album will be big. Even with just a few projects out and a small amount of plays, our efforts are not going unnoticed. With small labels paying attention and venues reaching out for performances this early in, I believe that the album will move things forward.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an artist in all meanings of the sense. I write my own songs, design my own graphics and merch, and imagine my own concepts. I am currently known more for my modeling work, but I am avidly working to be recognized as a musician first. I am most proud of this album we are working on. It is a true masterpiece in the making. Before I began pursuing music as my career, I found out that I am Bipolar. In my album, I explore my experience with Bipolar disorder, through incorporating the symptoms in my lyrics and the nature of the episodes in the very structure of the album with it having two parts the Upside representing mania and downside representing depression. S!sma and Tom have worked diligently to incorporate the same themes within the actual melodies and instruments, many of which were created from scratch using different sounds generated while we were recording. My unique style and the way we all have worked to represent bipolar disorder in every aspect of the album is what I believe will set this album apart from others. It’s new, fresh, and unheard of. We are beyond excited to drop it once it’s finished along with many visuals.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see us continuing to grow over the next 5 -10 years through expanding our fan base, touring, and releasing more music. I cannot say exactly what we will be doing but I can assure you that this is only the beginning.
