Meet Liz Higgins of Millennial Life Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Higgins.

Hi Liz, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Millennial Life Counseling was born out of a passion and a need to help modern-day couples thrive and heal in deeply committed and long-term relationships. I realized through my own journey of love that most of us really have NO idea what it actually takes to find- and sustain- a healthy, mature, yet passionate and resilient relationship. Modern relationships have been turned upside down by the impact of technology, social media, and high relational expectations, not to mention the choice paradox, leading to a plague of commitment phobia. The mission of our practice is to help couples and individuals create epic marriages, relationships, and lives, whatever stage of life they’re in.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
MLC, like any small business, has grown beyond my wildest dreams. I believe that we are one of the healthiest places to work in an industry where many people struggle to find a balanced, healthy workplace.

But where we are today isn’t where we began! In 2016, with a newborn and growing private practice, I made the transition to a group practice. As a business owner, there was a lot to learn about how to structure a group versus flying solo. I had to lean into the notion of being a boss and defining the standard for what our practice is about. I started working with mentors and business coaches and over the years, developed a personal goal to be the healthiest leader I could be. I have done the hard work of remaining in my own therapy and prioritizing healthy work-life balance, even while growing the team. I also give massive credit to our Practice Manager, Sarah, and Clinical Director, Anne, who have been with me over 4 years now at MLC. They have helped define our team culture and build a group of intention. As they say, “You don’t make it to the top alone,” and this has been so true for me!

We have become known in our community for providing high-quality and competent care to our clients. Each clinician on our team brings unique strengths and passions to their work with clients. It has been incredible being part of a space where clinicians can define who they want to be as therapists and to watch them shine in their work with clients navigating difficult seasons of life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Millennial Life Counseling?
At MLC, our mission is to help clients achieve relational wellness throughout their lives. We specialize in services including premarital counseling (and often work with dating couples who are serious about devoting intentional time into their relationship), post-marital/newlywed counseling, couples therapy, and individual therapy.

We also have a clinician who offers therapeutic yoga, providing clients with an alternative space to integrate the physical wellness component to their life and relationships (yes, we offer couples yoga!).

We offer premarital packages to couples who are interested in an experience more structured and guided by their therapist. As relational experts, we can often guide couples into important relational territory that they didn’t even realize would be important to explore together. Additionally, one of our therapists, Kayla, has created Common Ground, a monthly process and networking group for couples currently in premarital counseling. We find that many couples in this phase of life want to connect with other couples and build new friendships that are in a similar phase of life!

Some people wonder how individuals can do “relationship therapy.” Our core belief is that relationships can grow and change through the efforts of one or many. It only takes one person to change the structure of a system. From that perspective, we are able to help individuals who want to explore how to show up differently in their relationships, how to cultivate healthy boundaries in relationships, how to cultivate a stronger internal compass or external voice in relationships, and so much more.

In a similar vain, we absolutely love working with couples in session together. As the saying goes “We are wounded in relationship, and we are healed in relationship.” When couples work with our clinicians, they are guided by a specialist who understands the nuances of relational discord and how to help couples truly transform beyond their most stuck points.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to this team is the impact we can make as relational therapists. This is truly a unique type of work. The work we provide is what our world at large needs to work on. We teach people how to honor their own needs and wants in life while maintaining a relational “us” mindset. Though we live in a very individualistic world and generationally are encouraged to prioritize ourselves, we believe that true fulfillment in life is found in relational spaces. Studies have validated that even beyond individual impact and accomplishment, “who” was with you through it all and, in the end, is what matters most to people. The impact that working on relationships can have on your physical health, your mental wellness, and self-esteem is undeniable!
