Today we’d like to introduce you to Lizbeth Diaz.
Lizbeth, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved trying new foods from different places and photography has always been one of my hobbies. So I began posting new foods from different restaurants all across Dallas on my Facebook and Snapchat, from there friends and family would wonder where these restaurants were located and where I would eat next. I then decided to post to Instagram without knowing the foodie industry was even a thing. Taking photos of the foods, concentrating on the angles, the lighting, the food setup searching for new restaurants in the area and where to go next I was immediately hooked. From then I would try everything from high-end places to hole in the wall restaurants. I mostly love trying local foods to support my surrounding community. I find that smaller restaurants benefit better from social media because business would be different without it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A few obstacles in this journey were getting out my shell. I am a very anti-social person, very shy, very quiet, so it was difficult for me to get out there in the foodie industry. Once I learned how to move that obstacle behind me, this foodie experience has helped me meet so many great people, I have created friendships, and I have been able to build professional connections. It has been a great experience so far, and I hope to meet and connect with more great people along the way. So for the ones who struggle with this obstacle just know to Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I love to share foods I grew up eating. To Pambazos from Mexico City or Torta de tamales. As a Latina, it is important to support your culture in this industry. Latin food is progressively embraced in the US, and we succeed best when we support each other. This is a great industry to celebrate our similarities and our differences — culinary field is so diverse, and as foodies, we can use these opportunities to celebrate our great cultures.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
To meet more great people who enjoy eating and exploring new foods as much as I do. My plan for the future is to start my own YouTube channel and go from taking photos of my food to actually talking about it. To explain the places I am visiting, to describe what I am eating. I have purchased a camera for it, now what I have to do is actually do it! Wish me luck!
