Meet Lorenzo Lester of Nothing Lest Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorenzo Lester.

Hi Lorenzo , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My DJ journey started from a deep love of music and the way it brings people together. I’ve always been drawn to how sound can change a mood, shift the energy in a room, and create memories. What started as a personal passion quickly grew into something bigger, something I wanted to see if I could build a life around it.
I began DJing small events, I mean SMALL! I started out just DJing in the backyard whenever we had family gatherings and try to create a vibe for my folks. Afterwards, when I gain enough confidence, I went out nearby bars and restaurants near my home to see if anyone needed a DJ. Eventually I got my first paid gig and that was at MeMee’s Wings (Shoutout to them)! I remember I was nervous as hell, but because I practiced so much before this gig, once I got started it was up from there! Later on, it let me to do corporate events, conferences, weddings, and networking mixers! Speaking on the matter, one of my corporate events I’ve recently done that I’m proud of was being the official DJ for the American Black Chiropractor Association, which was a 3 Day Convention! I learned to adapt to different vibes and crowds while staying true to my style.
I came up with the name DJ Nothing Lest from a mindset that was rooted within me which is: I don’t give less than everything I’ve got. No matter the crowd or the room. Having that kind of mentality it has guided me to stand out and secure those gigs from my target audiences, including residencies and multi-day conferences.
Today, I’m proud to run a business that represents not just good music, but intentional energy. I’m here to create experiences and memories, not just playlists.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! I’ve definitely had bumps throughout my ongoing journey. Building a DJ business or any business at that from the ground up takes more than just passion; it takes patience, hustle, and a whole lot of adaptability.
One of the biggest challenges early on was figuring out how I become more than just a guy with some speakers and a DJ board. I had to show people and importantly myself, I took this seriously. That’s why wanted to invest in my skills, which let me to Keep Spinning Academy. That meant investing in gear when I barely had the budget, branding myself, and learning the business side of things like contracts, marketing, and client communication.
On a personal level, there was a time when I got in a car accident on the way to a gig. When a check didn’t come through on time. I’ve had to work a gig where an hour before I arrived, I got a call that my aunt passed away. Moments like this one are hard comprehend because you have to remain a professional for your client when in your heart you feel the pain, struggle, and grief. As DJs, it’s our job set the mood or control the crowd even when it’s not a good day for us. The best thing you can do is temporary put your emotions to the side and focus on the task at hand, but decompress after when it’s all said and done.
It’s also tough juggling entrepreneurship, 9-5 job, and my own life. There are sacrifices, missed time with the wife, long nights, mental burn out. But I always reminded myself why I started and what I’m building: something lasting, something I can be proud of to call my own.
Those struggles sharpened me. They made me better at reading rooms, handling pressure, and appreciating the wins. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s made me who I am, and I wouldn’t trade it.

We’ve been impressed with Nothing Lest Productions , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is my ability to read the room and shift the vibe in real time. I don’t just play music, I guide energy. Whether it’s keeping a corporate crowd engaged between speakers or hype the crowd up at a late-night reception, I move with purpose. My motto is: Nothing Lest. And that’s how I show up, every single gig.
I’m known for bringing professionalism and personality. I show up early, come prepared, and deliver a polished experience from the first email to the final track. I use contracts, booking systems like HoneyBook, and brand visuals to make it clear this isn’t a side hustle, it’s a business.
If you’re planning an event and you want someone who blends art with professionalism, someone who will care as much about your event as you do, I’m that DJ. I bring more than sound. I bring presence.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Start with intention. Don’t just chase gigs, build something real. Know why you’re doing it and what kind of experience you want to offer people. That clarity will guide you when you know which kind of DJ you want to be.
Invest in your craft, PRACTICE, and invest in your business. That means the music, yes, but also your branding, your communication, your contracts, your equipment. How you present yourself matters just as much as how you touch that board.
Be consistent. A lot of people want the spotlight, but not everyone wants to do the behind-the-scenes work. The wins come from showing up when no one’s watching, learning your gear, building up an identity, staying organized, and being dependable. That’s what keeps the bookings coming back.
And finally: stay humble, stay hungry. Keep learning, keep showing love, and never give less.
