Meet Lori Dunham of Dunham Business Radio in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Dunham.

Lori, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I became a published author in 2017. The publicity around the book launch generated a media invitation to be a guest on “The Queen Silvy Show” – a radio program on the Fishbowl Radio Network. After having a successful interview, the host asked me to return as a regular monthly guest to share business ideas with their audience.

For eight consecutive months, the guest appearance increased from a 5-minute segment to nearly 20-minutes. In October 2018, the network owner asked me to consider hosting my own show (a request that I heard many times from several people). Initially, I considered the offer as “ridiculous” as I am a private person and never saw myself as a media personality. After much prayer and contemplation, I began to see the idea of a show come to light and the concept of Dunham Business Radio was born.

Dunham Business Radio provides a platform for Entrepreneurs, Small Business Owners, Non-profit Organizations and “BizKids” to share their product or service, as well as discuss their journey to being entrepreneurs. We talk about successes, challenges, their start and where they want to go in the future. Non-profit organizations can connect with our audience for events, fundraisers and membership drives. My goal is to connect to an entrepreneurial audience and provide encouragement and hope for their journey.

We launched our first show on January 14, 2019. In October 2019, Fishbowl Communications awarded us the “Grey Bowl Show of the Year” award. No other show in the 10-year history of the network has received this award during their first year on air. We received it in just under ten months and we were rocketed to a new level of excellence.

I am so grateful to Voyager Dallas for this opportunity to share what God is doing!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I believe every journey has challenges. It is our response to those challenges that determine our joy along the way. It is the existence of challenges that makes one know that they are doing something amazing. My biggest personal challenge was to change my mindset about the ability to host a show. I did not expect that I would have anything of value to say, and I did not see “my story” as being interesting enough to carry a show for very long.

One day, I had an epiphany – I realized that success came from focusing on my guests and being a connector. This is my true calling, and when I approached the show with this heartfelt intention, the show became entertaining, interesting, insightful and impactful. I see now that success started when I took the focus off of me and my skills and trusted that God had a big plan for my life and the lives of my guests. I was called to bring their dream forward and help them gain promotion and connection to quality circles. I applied the advice of Zig Ziglar who said, “Help enough people get what they want, and you will always have what you need” (paraphrase)

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Dunham Business Radio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The Dunham Business Radio Show offers a “human” side to business. It is not about numbers and forecasts, or analytics and marketplace activities – there are many shows that already do that. Our show highlights the stories of those along many stages of the entrepreneurial journey. Some are just starting out, while others have reached the pinnacle and longevity that we all aim to reach. I ask the guest to offer “golden nuggets of hope” to our listeners to encourage them where they are. Some nuggets have been so inspirational and motivational that tissues are needed.

I am especially proud to help the “BizKids”. These are kids under 18 who have a business or non-profit already in place – or maybe even just an idea/concept. We invite them on the show to showcase what they do or dream of. In exchange, we help connect them to industry professionals in their space for collaboration or mentorship, and in some cases, identify scholarships to help them attend college to pursue their dream. We are the launchpad for their dreams regardless of what stage they are in.

I am very proud to be of service to our non-profit organizations. They are invited on the show to discuss their mission and vision. We invite the audience to engage through upcoming events, fundraisers, membership drives and volunteer opportunities. We have helped several organizations meet their objectives through our show. I believe that together we can achieve so much more. We are not just a radio show. For all of our guests, we are a one-stop promotion agent – on and off the air. Being on the show is the first step to whatever the guests need to promote their business. We have the connections to help them get to the next level.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We continue to build a large, loyal listening audience, as well as, a social media presence on multiple platforms. Our new Dunham Business Radio Mobile App directly connects our guests with the audience. When downloading the “Dunham Business Radio” Mobile App from the App Store or Google Play, enter the referral code: dbradio for special promotions.
