Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Barbosa.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia. Surrounded by a family of musicians and heavily influenced with all the richness in South American culture. But with that, I also had minimal knowledge about America and my English was pretty bad. “Excuse me? and Where’s the restroom?” were some of the few phrases I knew back then, but that did not stop me from wanting to come to the US.
In 2009, I landed in Las Vegas with a dream of playing basketball and that was the only thing in my head. Working towards the same goal, I moved to LA, got injured playing in college tryouts (I know, lucky me!) and like many other immigrants, had to work to sustain myself with whatever job I could find.
I loved physics and music so I continued to study both and started my first job as a grocery bagger at a supermarket in Studio City, CA. Somewhere in the middle of my American journey I ended up working in radio and began editing audio for commercials, met a lot of talented individuals there and I worked my way up to television. After Los Angeles, I tried Salt Lake City and lastly settled in Dallas after receiving a position at Liberman Broadcasting where my video career really started. While working in TV for Liberman I met Dani, the love of my life, who encourage me to follow my passion and study film. Since then I like to consider myself a visual storyteller because I like bringing language through the motion and feel behind a camera.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. In fact, I would say that having to deal with all the struggles of living alone in a new country and culture is not easy. That has probably been the hardest struggle for me because I had no one, all of my family still lives in Colombia and I had to adapt to pretty much a new world, it wasn’t easy at all.
But not everything was bad, I also had the pleasure of meeting some great people that gave me a hand and guided me when I needed it.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
These past three years, I’ve been traveling around the US operating camera and tech, in shows like The Great Food Truck Race, Real House Wives of Dallas, and some other productions. In my life as a creator, I’ve had the pleasure of working for The Food Network, Bravo, HGTV, Netflix, and NBC. I’ve also had the pleasure to work with Kevin Hart, Rick Flair, Steve Aoki, Bastille and brands like Nike and Ford.
My leadership skills developed through several years of solo work as well as leading post-production teams. My experience as a camera operator has encouraged me to pursue a role as director of photography, and I strive every day to achieve that goal.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would say the last project I did with Blake Shelton for his music video “God’s Country”. But then again, I always think that of my last project until a new one comes along. So, really all of them. My life has always been full of beautiful people and crazy stories, and for that, I am extremely grateful.
