Today we’d like to introduce you to Luqman Rashada.
Luqman, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My musical journey started out when I was little, 4 or 5 maybe. I remember singing to my granny in Dallas, Texas from Atlanta, Georgia over the phone. The song was Just My Imagination by The Temptations. Throughout my childhood my mother put on shows in our community that me and my siblings performed in. I was a shy kid growing up so standing up in front of people and singing was not my favorite thing.
As a birthday present to myself when I was 16, I decided to teach myself guitar and from there I started writing and performing on my own. When I was 19 I was working as server for a restaurant in Dallas and had the opportunity to audition for a live music spot on Wednesday nights. After a couple weeks of auditions, I started getting paid to play. Considering what I was making at the time as a waiter, I was happy to trade that job for something I really loved to do. That was my “in” and I haven’t looked back since.
Since 2013 I’ve been blessed to make a living as a musician and my journey has led me to participating in the television shows The Voice and American Idol. Today I am working on my debut EP and some singles that are soon to be released.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me has been fear. It’s a mean culprit and it’s held me back from countless past opportunities. Fear of the unknown and fear of what people might think. I can’t recall where this is from but I remember hearing something to the effect of “in order to overcome your fear, you have to want what you fear more than you’re afraid of it”. I hope that makes sense. It’s that mindset that I adopt every single time I wake up in the morning. I’ll admit that it’s not always the easiest thing to do, but my intention is to do my best every day.
So, as you know, we’re impressed – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My performance business was started in 2013 when I got paid for my first gig. My prayer is to have it grow larger than life someday, but for now it’s just me adding a little joy to folks lives on a daily basis. I’ve been hired to perform at everything from corporate events to 16 year old graduation parties. During my sets, you’ll hear funky renditions in a variety of styles by artists such as Bruno Mars, The Eagles, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, Chris Stapleton, originals and more. Give me a time, give me a place, give me an outlet and we’ll rock it!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
