Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynne Buchanan.
Lynne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an abstract painter working in acrylic and mixed media. My background includes a BFA in Drawing and Painting, 22 years of teaching art in public schools and upon retirement, full-time painting. I have been fortunate to receive numerous awards from local, state and regional competitions.
My work focuses on marks and layers that I cover and uncover and ultimately use to solve a visual puzzle. For me, abstract art is an elusive relationship of challenges and rewards. My intent is that the paintings convey these challenges and rewards. Ultimately, I hope that the viewer will connect with the story and experience the visual joy.
What does my art mean?
I used to reference old barns cactus and old buildings they represent memories from my childhood visits to rural Kansa and Nebraska. In my journey back to abstraction, I called upon memories of New Mexico landscape. Where real or imagined there is a secure/peaceful feeling when I see in my mind or create an image of these memories.
Within an abstract framework, you can invent and imagine memories of travel, adventures, and interactions. My hope is that is that the viewer will engage in this conversation. I continue to teach Art in the summer in the College for Kids program at Tarrant County College. I teach at several local studios as well. Teaching the concept of abstract art is challenging but rewarding as I share my knowledge and experiences with abstract art.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have gone through stages and levels of growth in making my art. After years of full-time teaching, it felt awkward to make art for me. Once, I began competing in juried shows and gained gallery representation I felt comfortable pursuing my own artistic vision. I am an abstract painter and I find my inspiration in nature. I am excited and like exactly where I am on my artistic journey.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a full-time abstract artist working in acrylic. As an abstract painter, My intent is to engage the viewer in my paintings. Without the viewer, there is no meaning in any art. I hope that my work invokes memories and invites questions and meaningful dialogue.
What sets me apart is my desire to give back and donate to charities for art auctions. I participate in Preservation is the Art of City in Ft. Worth. This is an annual fundraiser and their profit from art sales funds preserving historic buildings in Ft. Worth. I am always glad to donate to the Plan organization in Dallas, The 8×8 Biblical Arts Center and most recently The Lakewood Home Tour fundraiser in Dallas.
What were you like growing up?
I was an introvert who loved to read. Originally, I planned to be a ballerina but I discovered drawing. I grew up in Dallas and in High School attended a scholarship class on Saturday at the old DMA.
