Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Batman.

Madison Batman

Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I wanted to start a business before I knew what I wanted to sell.

It was May of 2020, the beginning of COVID, and I had just finished college and began working as a temp at a data entry job. It was a comfortable job but undeniably boring, so I began passing the days by listening to various podcasts while I worked. I listened to mostly mindset, personal growth, and entrepreneurship podcasts until one day I stumbled across The American Perfumer on Spotify and took a more serious interest in the fragrance industry. I remember thinking, “I found my calling!” a joyous epiphany that was short-lived as it was followed by a recollection of my intro to chemistry class in college and how I relied on make-ups and extra credit to get a decent enough grade. So, I did what anyone would do in this situation and promptly started researching the next best thing I could think of: How to make a candle. Fast forward to now, I’ve made thousands of candles, I am employed full-time at a candle manufacturer, and I just landed my candles in the new Meow Wolf location in Grapevine!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, it’s been a pretty smooth road, but life doesn’t come without its obstacles! I had the hardest time with deciding on a direction for my brand and ended up re-branding and changing my vision completely in 2022. Since doing so, I feel that it’s been easier to communicate my story and find the people who resonate with the idea of living boldly and having fun!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
The name Scent & Spill literally came to me in a dream (as cli·ché as it may sound). I knew then that it was the perfect name for my brand, and it was going to encompass all things bold and fun! My work for Scent & Spill embodies those dream-like, surreal, and nostalgic elements, with a foundation of self-care and mindfulness that I learned while pursuing my degree in Psychology at UNT. I create everything by hand in small batches in my home studio. Each fragrance is carefully chosen to feel bold, nuanced, and somewhat familiar, with names that suggest that it’s more than just another candle; it’s a lifestyle.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I love thinking back to the past! I would say my favorite childhood memories were at my grandma’s house. She had a dresser with all kinds of different perfume bottles sitting on top of it. I loved to pull up a chair and clink through the bottles, admiring how each fragrance could smell so different and how each of those pretty bottles contained a new experience hidden inside of it. This is where I can only assume that my love for fragrance first started.
